ประวัติสมาคมเทควันโดแห่งประเทศไทยประเทศไทย เริ่มรู้จักกีฬาเทควันโดเมื่อประมาณปี พ.ศ. 2508 โดยคณาจารย์จากสาธารณรัฐเกาหลีจำนวน 6 ท่าน ได้เดินทางมาทำการสอนเทควันโดให้กับทหารสหรัฐอเมริกาซึ่งตั้งฐานทัพอยู่ในประเทศไทย ในเวลานั้น เพื่อทำการรบในสงครามเวียดนามได้แก่ที่ ตาคลี ( นครสวรรค์นครราชสีมา อุดรธานี อุบลราชธานี และที่สัตหีบ ท่านอาจารย์เหล่านั้นได้เปิดสอนเทควันโดให้กับประชาชนทั่วไปด้วย บางท่านได้มาทำการสอนอยู่ที่สโมสร Y.M.C.A. ราชกรีฑาสโมสร และโรงยิมหลังโรงหนังลิโด สยามสแควร์ แต่เมื่อกองทัพสหรัฐถอนตัวออกจากประเทศไทย อาจารย์ทั้งหมดก็ได้ย้ายออกไปจากประเทศไทยด้วย จนถึงปี พ.ศ. 2516 อาจารย์ ซองคิยอง จึงได้รับมอบหมายจากสมาคมเทควันโดแห่งสาธารณรัฐเกาหลี ให้เดินทางมาเปิดสอนเทควันโดที่ราชกรีฑาสโมสรและในปี พ.ศ. 2519 ได้เปิดสำนักขึ้นอาจารย์ซองได้รับเชิญไปเป็นวิทยากรยังสถาบันหลายแห่ง เช่น โรงเรียนนายร้อยพระจุลจอมเกล้า โรงเรียนนายร้อยตำรวจสามพราน กรมทหารราบที่ 21 รักษาพระองค์ และโรงเรียนช่างฝีมือทหาร เป็นต้น
ขณะนั้นมีผู้ฝึกวิชาเทควันโดรวมกัน ประมาณ 5,000 คน ในปี พ.ศ. 2521 จึงได้ก่อตั้งสมาคมส่งเสริมศิลปะป้องกันตัวเทควันโดขึ้น ซึ่งสมาชิกได้มีมติเลือกคุณสรยุทธ์ ปัทมินทรวิภาส เป็นนายกสมาคมฯ คนแรก สมาคม ฯ ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นสมาคมเทควันโดแห่งประเทศไทย เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2528 และเข้าเป็นสมาชิกสหพันธ์เทควันโดโลก สหพันธ์เทควันโดเอเชีย สหพันธ์เทควันโดอาเซียน และเป็นสมาคมภายใต้การรับรองของ การกีฬาแห่งประเทศไทย และคณะกรรมการ โอลิมปิคแห่งประเทศไทย ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์
