บทบาทหน้าที่ของเลขานุการคือ ผู้แบ่งเบาภาระงานของผู้บริหารนั่นเอง หรืออาจกล่าวได้ว่า “เลขานุการจะต้องเป็นผู้มีความรู้รอบตัว” (Jill-of-all Trades) กล่าวคือ เลขานุการจะต้องมีความรู้ความสามารถในทุก ๆ ด้าน และสามารถแสดงบทบาทตามสถานการณ์ต่าง ๆ ได้อย่างเหมาะสม
