เมื่อแจ็กเสียชีวิตลงด้วยความเป็นคนชั่วเขาจึงไม่ได้ไปสวรรค์ วิญญาณเขาล่องลอยไปยังปากทางนรก และพบกับซาตานคู่อริเก่าอีกครั้ง ตามสัญญาที่ให้ไว้ ซาตานปล่อยวิญญาณของแจ็กไป พร้อมแสงไฟส่องนำทางให้กับวิญญาณแจ็กที่ต้องเร่ร่อน ไม่มีที่ไปอย่างนั้นตลอดกาล ทุกคืนฮาโลวีนวิญญาณของแจ็กจะระหกระเหินไปในความมืด พร้อมแสงไฟส่องที่ครอบด้วยหัวผักกาด ต่อมาเมื่อตำนานนี้เข้ามาในอเมริกา ก็มีการเปลี่ยนมาใช้ผลฟักทองแทนจนทุกวันนี้

ตำนานอื่นมีการเล่าว่า แจ็กเป็นคนขี้เกียจและนิสัยไม่ดี พอไปลงนรกแต่นรกไม่ต้องการตัวจึงส่งกลับมาในโลกให้อยู่ในร่างของฟักทอง
