ความเป็นมาของประเพณีตักบาตรดอกไม้
ตามความเชื่อของชาวพุทธ การตักบาตรดอกไม้เป็นการสร้างอานิสงส์ที่สูงส่งอย่างยิ่ง โดยปรากฎตาม พุทธตำนานว่า พระเจ้าพิมพิสาร กษัตริย์แห่งกรุงราชคฤห์ ทรงโปรดปรานดอกมะลิมาก ในแต่ละวันจะรับสั่งให้นายมาลาการนำดอกมะลิสดมาถวายถึง วันละ 8 กำมือ วันหนึ่งขณะที่นายมาลาการกำลังเก็บดอกมะลิ ได้พบเห็นพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า พร้อมด้วยภิกษุสงฆ์อีกจำนวนหนึ่งเสด็จออกบิณฑบาตร นายมาลาการสังเกตุเห็นพรรณรังษี ฉายประกาย รอบ ๆ พระวรกาย ทำให้เกิดความเลื่อมใสศรัทธาพระพุทธองค์อย่างยิ่ง นายมาลาการตัดสินใจนำดอกมะลิที่มีไปถวายแด่ พระพุทธเจ้า พร้อมกันนั้นก็ตั้งจิตอธิษฐานว่า ข้าวของทุกสิ่งที่พระเจ้าพิมพิสารทรงมอบให้เพียงเพื่อยังชีพในภพนี้เท่านั้น แต่การนำดอกไม้ถวายบูชาแก่พระพุทธองค์ สร้างอานิสงส์ได้ทั้งภพนี้และภพหน้า หากถูกประหารชีวิตเพราะไม่ได้ถวายดอกมะลิก็ยินยอม ครั้นภรรยานายมาลาทราบความ ก็เกรงกลัวว่าจะต้องโทษที่สามีไม่ปฏิบัติตามพระบัญชาของพระเจ้าพิมพิสาร
ก็หลบหนีออกจากบ้านไป แต่หลังจากที่พระเจ้าพิมพิสารทรงทราบกลับพอพระราชหฤทัยเป็นอันมาก และได้ปูนบำเหน็จรางวัล ความดีความชอบแก่นายมาลาการ นับแต่นั้นมาชีวิตของนายมาลาการก็อยู่อย่างมีความสุข ชาวอำเภอพระพุทธบาทได้ยึดถือประเพณีตักบาตรดอกไม้เป็นประเพณีสำคัญ ปฏิบัติสืบต่อ กันมา เป็นประจำทุกปี และกำหนดเอาวันเข้าพรรษา คือวันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือน 8 ของทุกปี เป็นวันประเพณีตักบาตรดอกไม้ ในวันนั้น เมื่อพระภิกษะสงฆ์รับบิณฑบาตรดอกไม้จากพุทธศาสนิกชน
แล้วนำออกมาสักการะพระเจดีย์ที่บรรจุพระเขี้ยวแก้วขององค์พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า แล้วนำไป สักการะบูชาพระเจดีย์มหาธาตุองค์ใหญ่ที่บรรจุพระบรมพระสารีริกธาตุ และเข้าโบสถ์ประกอบพิธี สวดอธิษฐานเข้าพรรษา
ประเพณีตักบาตรดอกไม้เป็นประเพณีสำคัญที่อยู่คู่กับวัดพระพุทธบาทราชวรมหาวิหารมาช้านาน พี่น้องประชาชนชาวพระพุทธบาทและใกล้เคียง จะถือเอาวันเข้าพรรษาของทุกปี (ตรงกับแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือน 8) เป็นวันตักบาตรดอกไม้ และตั้งแต่ปี 2544 เป็นต้นมา จังหวัดสระบุรี ได้เพิ่มจำนวนวันตักบาตรดอกไม้ จาก 1 วัน เป็น 3 วัน มีพิธีตักบาตรดอกไม้วันละ 2 รอบ คือ รอบเช้าเวลา 10.00 น. รอบบ่าย เวลา 15.00 น. ปีนี้ประเพณีตักบาตรดอกไม้ตรงกับวันที่ 20-22 กรกฎาคม 2548
ในวันแรกของการจัดงานคือวันที่ 20 กรกฎาคม 2548 เป็นพิธีบวงสรวงดวงพระวิญญาณ สมเด็จพระเจ้าทรงธรรม และสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่มีอยู่ในอาณาบริเวณพระพุทธบาท
ภาคค่ำขบวนพยุหยาตราสมเด็จพระเจ้าทรงธรรม ขบวนรถบุปผชาติ การแสดงศิลปพื้นบ้าน วัฒนธรรม และขบวนต่างๆ จะเริ่มเคลื่อนออกจากหน้าสำนักงานเทศบาลตำบลพระพุทธบาท ไปตามถนนพหลโยธินและเลี้ยวเข้าบริเวณวัดพระพุทธบาทราชวรมหาวิหาร โดยจะมีพิธีเปิดงานพิธีตักบาตรดอกไม้ในภาคค่ำ้ดอกไม้ที่ใช้ตักบาตรแด่พระภิกษุสงฆ์นั้นจะต้องเป็น “ดอกเข้าพรรษา” เท่านั้น
ดอกเข้าพรรษา เป็นดอกไม้ชนิดหนึ่ง ต้นคล้าย ๆ ต้นกระชาย หรือ ขมิ้น สูงประมาณ 1 คืบเศษ มีดอกสีเหลือง สีขาวและสีน้ำเงินม่วง ต้นดอกไม้เข้าพรรษานี้จะ ขึ้นตามไหล่เขาโพธิ์ลังกา หรือเขาสุวรรณบรรพต เทือกเขาวง และเขาพุใกล้ ๆ กับรอยพระพุทธบาท และจะผลิดอกเฉพาะช่วงเข้าพรรษาเท่านั้น จนชาวบ้านเรียกชื่อให้เป็นที่เหมาะสมว่า “ต้นเข้าพรรษา" ดอกไม้เข้าพรรษาที่ชาวพุทธออกไปเก็บนั้น ดอกสีเหลือง ดอกสีขาว ดูจะหาง่ายไม่ลำบากยากเย็นนัก แต่การเก็บดอกไม้เข้าพรรษาสีม่วง เขาถือกันว่าถ้าใครออกไปเก็บดอกไม้เข้าพรรษาสีม่วง มาใส่บาตรได้ คนนั้นจะได้รับบุญกุศลมากมายกว่าการนำดอกไม้สีอื่น ๆ มาตักบาตร หลังจากที่พระภิกษุสงฆ์เดินรับบิณฑบาตรจากพุทธศาสนิกชนแล้ว จะนำดอกไม้ไปสักการะ “รอยพระพุทธบาท” พระเจดีย์จุฬามณี อันเป็นพระเจดีย์ที่บรรจุพระเขี้ยวแก้วจำลองขององค์พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า แล้วนำไปสักการะพระเจดีย์มหาธาตุองค์ใหญ่ ซึ่งชาวพุทธถือว่าเป็นพระเจดีย์ที่บรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ พระเจดีย์องค์นี้ ทรงเหมือนกับองค์พระธาตุพนม เป็นการคารวะต่อองค์พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า และระหว่างที่พระภิกษุเดินลงจากพระมณฑปนั้น พุทธศาสนิกชนก็จะนำเอาน้ำสะอาดมาล้างเาพระภิกษุสงฆ์ ซึ่งถือว่าน้ำที่ได้ชำระล้างเท้าให้พระภิกษุสงฆ์นั้นเสมือนหนึ่งได้ชำระล้างบาปของตนด้วย สำหรับ การจัดงานประพณีตักบาตรดอกไม้ในวันที่สองของการจัดงาน จะมีพิธีตักบาตรดอกไม้ 2 รอบคือ เวลา 10.00 น. และ 15.00 น. ส่วนในวันสุดท้ายของการจัดงาน ซึ่งตรงกับวันเข้าพรรษา จะมีพิธีถวายเทียนพรรษาพระราชทาน และเทียนพรรษา ณ อุโบสถวัดพระพุทธบาทราชวรมหาวิหาร ประเพณีตักบาตรดอกไม้และถวายเทียนพรรษา ประจำปี 2548 ยังมีกิจกรรมอื่นๆที่น่าสนใจ เช่น การจำหน่ายสินค้าหนึ่งตำบลหนึ่งผลิตภัณฑ์การประกวดเทพีตักบาตรดอกไม้ การจัดนิทรรศการตักบาตรดอกไม้ การประกวดจัดดอกไม้ใบตอง และกิจกรรมอื่นๆอีกมากมาย
“ตักบาตรดอกไม้” นับเป็นประเพณีอันเก่าแก่ ที่ควรค่าแห่งการอนุรักษ์ยิ่งเพราะหนึ่งปีมีหนึ่งครั้ง และมีเพียงแห่งเดียวที่พระพุทธบาทราชวรมหาวิหาร นอกจากชาวพุทธศาสนิกชน จะได้บุญกุศลอันยิ่งใหญ่ กับการถวายดอกเข้าพรรษาแด่พระภิกษุสงฆ์ แล้วยังตื่นตา ตื่นใจกับขบวนรถบุพชาติ ขบวนวัฒนธรรม และการแสดงศิลปพื้นบ้านด้วย ที่ขาดเสียมิได้คือ ความงดงามของดอกเข้าพรรษา ที่บานสะพรั่ง ทั่วทั้งวัดพระพุทธบาทตลอดทั้ง 3 วัน

ความสำคัญ เจตนาเดิมของชาวบ้านที่ทำประเพณีนี้เพราะต้องการให้พระที่กำลังเดินขึ้นไปที่พระอุโบสถ เพื่ออธิษฐานเข้าพรรษาได้มีดอกไม้บูชาพระ ชาวบ้านเองก็พลอยเป็นผู้ได้บุญไปด้วย แต่ปัจจุบันได้ปรับปรุงเป็นพิธีการใหญ่ มีประชาชนจากท้องถิ่นอื่นมาร่วมงาน ขบวนรถแต่ละอำเภอตกแต่งสวยงาม บางครั้งก็มีการโฆษณากิจกรรมของท้องถิ่นตนไปด้วย เป็นงานที่รวมคน รวมความคิด รวมฝีมือ และรวมศรัทธา
พิธีกรรม ที่จริงการนำดอกไม้ถวายพระหรือบูชาพระจะทำเมื่อใดก็ได้ แต่ที่ชาวพระพุทธบาทปฏิบัติกันเป็นพิเศษในวันเข้าพรรษา คือ เมื่อถึงฤดูฝนจะมีดอกไม้ชนิดหนึ่งขึ้นตามเชิงเขา ดอกชนิดนี้มีลักษณะคล้ายต้นกระชายหรือต้นขมิ้น สูงประมาณ ๑ คืบเศษ บางต้นก็มีดอกสีเหลือง บางต้นก็มีดอกสีขาว บางต้นก็มีดอกสีม่วง ดอกชนิดนี้จะขึ้นเฉพาะหน้าฝนเข้าพรรษาเท่านั้น ชาวบ้า
