จากกรุงเทพมหานครโดยสารรถไฟไปลงที่ขอนแก่น จากนั้นโดยสารรถประจำทางสายขอนแก่น-เลย ไปยังหน้าตลาดที่ว่าการอำเภอภูกระดึง แล้วต่อรถสองแถว หรือเดินทางต่อไปอีกประมาณ 5 กิโลเมตร ก็จะถึงที่ทำการอุทยานแห่งชาติภูกระดึง ซึ่งจะเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นปีนเขาขึ้นยอดภู จากนั้นต้องเดินเท้าขึ้นยอดภู อีก 5 กิโลเมตร จึงจะถึง “หลังแป” แล้วเดินเท้าไปตามทุ่งหญ้าอีก 4 กิโลเมตร ก็จะถึงที่พักบนยอดภูกระดึงทางอุทยานฯ ได้จัดลูกหาบสัมภาระของนักท่องเที่ยวขึ้นไปบนยอดภูกระดึง คิดค่าบริการเป็นกิโลกรัม (วิธีนี้ปัจจุบันไม่ค่อยนิยม)
