อำเภอแม่อาย เดิมเป็นกิ่งอำเภอขึ้นกับอำเภอฝาง ซึ่งทางราชการได้แยกตำบลแม่อาย ตำบลแม่สาว และตำบลแม่นาวาง ออกจากอำเภอฝาง ยกฐานะ ให้เป็นกิ่ง ให้นามว่ากิ่งอำเภอแม่อายตามประกาศกระทรวงมหาดไทย ลงวันที่ 10 สิงหาคม 2510 และเวลาต่อมาอีก 6 ปี ได้ประกาศยกฐานะกิ่งอำเภอแม่อาย ขึ้นเป็นอำเภอแม่อาย เมื่อวันที่ 28 มิถุนายน 2516
