ประไทยมีกฎหมายรักษาสิ่งแวดล้อมมาตั้งแต่อดีต มีไว้เพื่อป้องกัน และเยียวยาความเสื่อมโทรมสิ่งแวดล้อม และจำกัดเงื่อนไขในการดำเนินกิจการบางประเภทของมนุษย์ เช่น กำหนดปริมาณของภาวะมลพิษที่จะให้มีได้ หรือกำหนดให้ต้องมีการวางแผนและการตรวจสอบกิจการบางอย่าง ได้มีการริเริ่มจะให้มีกฎหมายสิ่งแวดล้อมขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกในยุคปฏิวัติอุตสาหกรรมประมาณช่วง พ.ศ. 2503
สิ่งแวดล้อมส่งผลกระทบทั้งด้านดีและด้านไม่ดีต่อมนุษย์ แต่สิ่งแวดล้อมเป็นปัจจัยที่มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับการดำรงชีวิต มีส่วนทำให้คุณภาพของมนุษย์ไปในทางที่ดีและไม่ดี เพราะฉะนั้นทุกคนจึงมีส่วนร่วมในการปรับปรุงและดูแลรักษา เพื่อลดปัจจัยเสี่ยงต่อการเกิดโรคต่างๆที่เกี่ยวเนื่องมากจากสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ไม่ถูกสุขลักษณะ
ความสำคัญของสิ่งแวดล้อมที่มีต่อสิ่งมีชีวิต
1.น้ำใช้เพื่อการบริโภคและเป็นที่อยู่อาศัยของสัตว์น้ำ อากาศใช้เพื่อการหายใจของมนุษย์และสัตว์ ดินเป็นแหล่งที่อยู่อาศัยของคนและสัตว์
2.มนุษย์สามารถใช้ประโยชน์จากสิ่งแวดล้อมได้มากมาย ในลักษณะที่แตกต่างไปจากสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่น ๆ เช่น ใช้ประโยชน์จากดินเพื่อการเพาะปลูก ใช้ประโยชน์จากทุ่งหญ้าเพื่อการเลี้ยงสัตว์
ผมคิดว่าสาเหตุของปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมเกิดจากการเพิ่มจำนวนของประชากร ประชากรยิ่งเยอะ ความต้องการก็มากขึ้น เช่น ความต้องการพื้นที่อยู่อาศัยที่เพิ่มขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็ว จนมีการบุกรุกทำลายป่าอันควรสงวนไว้ เกิดความเสื่อมโทรมของสภาพสิ่งแวดล้อมขึ้นโดยทั่วไปและอาจทำให้เกิดผลเสียหายร้ายแรงในอนาคต
