มีชายยากจนคนหนึ่ง อาศัยอยู่ใกล้บ้านเศรษฐี โดยปลูกเป็นกระท่อมเล็ก ๆ เขาจะย้ายกระท่อมที่พักนี้ตามทิศทางลม เพราะชายผู้นี้จะคอยสูดกลิ่นอาหารที่มาจากบ้านเศรษฐี เศรษฐีสังเกตเห็นชายยาจกนี้ย้ายกระท่อมบ่อยจึงให้คนใช้ไปสืบถาม ชายยาจกก็บอกไปตามความจริงว่าย้ายตามฤดูกาลของทิศทางลม เพื่อจะสูดกลิ่นอาหารจากบ้านเศรษฐี
เมื่อเศรษฐีทราบจากคนใช้เช่นนั้น ก็บอกกับชายยาจกว่า “เจ้ามีชีวิตอยู่ได้เพราะกลิ่นอาหารจากบ้านเรา เจ้าจะต้องมาเป็นคนใช้บ้านเรา” ชายยาจกไม่ยอม เศรษฐีจึงนำชายยาจกไปฟ้องผู้พิพากษา ผู้พิพากษาตัดสินให้ชายยาจกเป็นคนใช้ของเศรษฐีแต่ชายยาจกไม่ยอม ขอร้องทุกข์ต่อพระมหากษัตริย์ เมื่อพระมหากษัตริย์ได้ทราบเรื่องราวก็ทรงรับสั่งให้อำมาตย์นำผ้าขาวมาวางไว้กลางท้องพระโรง แล้วทรงให้นำเงินไปวางไว้ในผ้าขาว แล้วรับสั่งกับเศรษฐีว่า “เศรษฐีจงรับเงินค่าตัวของชายยาจกไปเถิด”
