ประวัติความเป็นมาของโทรศัพท์

โทรศัพท์ประดิษฐ์เป็นครั้งแรกในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา โดยอเล็กซานเดอร์ เกรแฮม เบลล์ (Alexander Graham Bell) เมื่อ พ.ศ.๒๔๑๙ (ค.ศ.1876) [๑] และต่อมาเครื่องชุมสายโทรศัพท์ได้ถูกเปิดให้บริการผู้เช่าเป็นครั้งแรกในเมืองนิวฮาเวน(New Haven)มลรัฐคอนเนตทิคัต (Conecticut) เป็นระบบที่ใช้พนักงานต่อสายสัญญาณ (Manual) ต่อมาเครื่องชุมสายโทรศัพท์ได้ถูกพัฒนา จากระบบที่ใช้พนักงานต่อเป็นระบบอัตโนมัติ (Automatic Telephone Exchange) เครื่องชุมสายโทรศัพท์ระบบอัตโนมัติเครื่องแรก เป็นระบบการสลับทีละขั้น หรือระบบสเต็ปบายสเต็ป (Step-By-Step) ออกแบบโดยอัลมอน บี สโตรว์เกอร์ (Almon B.Strowger) ในปี พ.ศ ๒๔๓๕ (ค.ศ. 1892) และเปิดใช้ในเมืองลาปอเต้ (La Porte) มลรัฐอินเดียน่า (Indiana) ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาเป็นครั้งแรก เครื่องชุมสายระบบอัตโนมัติได้ถูกพัฒนาขึ้นจากระบบ Step-By-Step และระบบครอสบาร์สวิทช์ (Crossbar switch) ซึ่งเป็นเครื่องชุมสายแบบระบบเครื่องจักรกลอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ (Electromechnical System) มาเป็นเครื่องชุมสายระบบอิเลคทรอนิกส์ (Electronic Switching System) ในช่วงแรกของการพัฒนาเครื่องชุมสายนั้น ส่วนที่เป็นตัวควบคุมได้ถูกออกแบบให้เป็นตัวกลางในการควบคุมการทำงานของวงจร เครื่องชุมสายระบบครอสบาร์สวิทช์ (Crossbar switch) ระบบเริ่มแรก ต่อมาได้นำระบบการควบคุมทางอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ (Electronic control) มาใช้ซึ่งระบบการควบคุมประกอบด้วยสามส่วนได้แก่ Hardware logic Programmable wired logic และ Stored program

control ( SPC) ระบบเอชพีซี (SPC) เป็นที่นิยมนำมาใช้เนื่องจากมีข้อดีในการนำเทคโนโลยีคอมพิวเตอร์มาใช้ประโยชน์ในการออกแบบระบบการควบคุมดูแลและการเปลี่ยนแปลงข้อมูลของชุมสาย นอกจากนี้ระบบ SPC ยังทำให้สามารถมีบริการต่างๆ (Facilities) แก่ผู้เช่าได้มาก เครื่องชุมสายระบบ SPC แบบแอนะล็อก (Analog) ได้ถูกนำมาเปิดใช้งานบริการแก่ผู้เช่าเป็นครั้งแรก เมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๘ (ค.ศ.1965) การพัฒนาเครื่องชุมสายระบบนี้ ได้ถึงจุดอิ่มตัว ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ.๒๕๑๓ (ค.ศ. 1970) โดยนำอุปกรณ์สารกึ่งตัวนำ (Semiconductors) มาใช้เป็นส่วนประกอบในเครื่องชุมสายโทรศัพท์ โดยนำวิธีการจัดการสัญญาณแบบดิจิทัล เช่น การแปลงสัญญาณเสียงให้เป็นข้อมูลดิจิทัล(Pluse coded Modulation: PCM) และการจัดสรรช่องสัญญาณแบบแบ่งตามเวลา (Time Division Multiplexing: TDM) มาใช้ในเครื่องชุมสาย SPC ทำให้มีประสิทธิภาพการทำงานดีกว่า SPC แบบเดิมมากเพราะทำให้เป็นเครื่องชุมสายแบบที่มีส่วนประกอบอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ทั้งหมด(Fully Electronics) เรียกว่าเป็นชุมสาย SPC แบบดิจิทัล

สำหรับในประเทศไทยได้นำโทรศัพท์มาใช้ครั้งแรกเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๒๔ ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๕ ติดตั้งที่กรุงเทพมหานครและจังหวัดสมุทรปราการเครื่องโทรศัพท์ที่ใช้ในระยะแรกคือ เครื่องโทรศัพท์ระบบแม็กนีโตหรือระบบไฟประจำเครื่อง ปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๕๐ ชุมสายโทรศัพท์แห่งแรกในประเทศไทย ติดตั้งระบบ ณ สำนักงานโทรศัพท์กลาง (วัดเลียบ) เป็นโทรศัพท์ไฟกลางใช้พนักงานต่อ (Central Battery: CB) เป็นชุมสายกึ่งอัตโนมัติ ต่อมาปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๘ เริ่มใช้ชุมสายระบบ Step by Step และปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๙๗ มีการสถาปนาองค์การโทรศัพท์แห่งประเทศไทยเพื่อให้บริการโทรศัพท์ ปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๒ เริ่มใช้ชุมสายโทรศัพท์ครอสบาร์ ติดตั้งครั้งแรกในประเทศไทยที่ชุมสายชลบุรี ปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๐ เริ่มใช้เครื่องโทรศัพท์แบบกดปุ่ม มาเปิดใช้ครั้งแรกในเขตนครหลวง ปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๖ เปิดใช้ชุมสายโทรศัพท์ระบบ SPC มาใช้ครั้งแรกที่ชุมสายภูเก็ต ปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๔๐ ปรับเปลี่ยนโทรศัพท์ระบบครอสบาร์ (แบบหมุน) เป็นระบบเอสพีซี (แบบกดปุ่ม) ทั้งหมด ต่อมาเมื่อวันที่ ๓๑ กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๔๕ องค์การโทรศัพท์แห่งประเทศไทยแปลงสภาพเป็น
