โครงการหมู่บ้านสหกรณ์อำเภอสันกำแพง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เป็นโครงการตามพระราชดำริ ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวรัชกาลปัจจุบัน ที่จะช่วยเหลือเกษตรกรที่มีฐานะยากจนไม่มีที่ดินทำกินเป็นของตนเอง ให้ได้ถือครองที่ดินเพื่ออยู่อาศัยและทำการเกษตรในรูปหมู่บ้านสหกรณ์ เพื่อเป็นการสนองพระราชดำริ กระทรวงมหาดไทย โดยสำนักงานเร่งรัดพัฒนาชนบทและกระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์ โดยกรมป่าไม้ ได้มีความเห็นร่วมกันว่าเพื่อช่วยเหลือเกษตรกรในพื้นที่จังหวัดทางภาคเหนือ ได้แก่ อำเภอดอยสะเก็ด อำเภอพร้าว อำเภอเมือง อำเภอสันกำแพง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ จังหวัดน่าน จังหวัดเชียงราย จังหวัดลำพูน จังหวัดลำปาง จังหวัดกำแพงเพชร จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน และจังหวัดพะเยา ที่ยากจนไม่มีที่ทำกินเป็นของตนเอง หรือมีแต่เพียงเล็กน้อยไม่พอที่จะประกอบอาชีพเลี้ยงครอบครัว สมควรที่จะได้รับการช่วยเหลือให้มีที่ทำกินตามแนวพระราชดำริ จึงได้เสนอโครงการหมู่บ้านสหกรณ์อำเภอสันกำแพง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เมื่อประมาณปลายปี พ.ศ.2518 โดยสำนักงานเร่งรัดพัฒนาชนบทได้ขอใช้พื้นที่ป่า เสื่อมโทรมบริเวณตำบลออนหลวย อำเภอสันกำแพง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ จากกรมป่าไม้ จำนวน 22,296.25 ไร่ เป็นที่ตั้งโครงการฯ เพื่อจัดสรรให้ราษฎรเข้าทำประโยชน์และได้รับอนุญาตจากกรมป่าไม้ เมื่อวันที่ 28 มิถุนายน 2520 โดยสมาชิกได้รับการจัดสรรที่ดินเป็นที่อยู่อาศัย ครอบครัวละ 200 ตารางวา และที่ดินสำหรับการเกษตรครอบครัวละ 4-7 ไร่
