อาเซียนเขตการค้าเสรีมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อเพิ่มศักยภาพการแข่งขันของอาเซียนเพราะชุมชนอาเซียนเป็นฐานการผลิตที่สำคัญสำหรับตลาดโลก ประเทศไทยได้เปิดเขตการค้าเสรีในแม่สายในปี 2009 และประเทศไทยมีผลกระทบอย่างมากโดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งข้าวกาแฟและสินค้าเกษตรเพราะมีสินค้าจากประเทศเพื่อนบ้านและจำหน่ายในประเทศไทยมากขึ้นกว่าครึ่งหนึ่ง นอกจากนี้คนงานต่างประเทศจะมาหางานเพื่อให้การทำงานของแรงงานต่างชาติฉกของคนงานไทยและยังทำให้คนไทยว่างงานเพิ่มขึ้นเพราะศักยภาพของคนไทยในทักษะภาษาต่างประเทศนั้นสู้ต่างชาติไม่ได้
