จุดประสงค์ของมูลนิธิช่วยชีวิตสัตว์ป่าแห่งประเทศไทย คือ การส่งสัตว์เหล่านี้กลับคืนสู่ธรรมชาติ แต่ก่อนที่จะส่งกลับไป สัตว์ป่าเหล่านี้ต้องผ่านกระบวนการปรับตัวก่อน เพื่อให้สามารถดำรงชีวิตได้เองในสภาพธรรมชาติ โดยเฉพาะสัตว์บางชนิด เช่น ชะนีที่ถูกเลี้ยงดูอยู่กับมนุษย์มาตลอด จะไม่สามารถหาอาหารได้เองตามธรรมชาติ และการกลับไปอยู่รวมกันในป่าก็ทำได้ยาก เพราะชะนีมีลักษณะเป็นสัตว์ที่อยู่กันเป็นครอบครัว สัตว์ป่าชนิดอื่น ๆ ก็เช่นเดียวกัน สัตว์ป่าตัวใดที่ไม่สามารถส่งกลับคืนสู่ป่าได้ ก็จำเป็นจะต้องส่งต่อไปให้เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าต่อไป
