ประวัติมหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏอุดรธานี มหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏอุดรธานี เดิมชื่อว่า “โรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูกสิกรรมมณฑลอุดร” ก่อตั้งเมื่อวันที่ 1 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2466 มีราชบุรุษเพิ่ม การสมศีล ทำหน้าที่แทนครูใหญ่ เปิดสอนหลักสูตรครูประกาศนียบัตรมณฑล โดยรับนักเรียนชายที่จบประถมศึกษาปีที่ 4 เข้าศึกษาต่ออีก 2 ปี นักเรียนเหล่านี้เป็นนักเรียนทุนจากจังหวัดต่าง ๆ ในมณฑล
สถานที่ตั้งเดิมอยู่ที่บริเวณสโมสรเสือป่ามณฑลอุดร ซึ่งเป็นที่ตั้งชั่วคราว ต่อมาจึงมีการก่อสร้างอาคารเรียนถาวรบริเวณห้วยโซ่ (มหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏอุดรธานี ในปัจจุบัน) มีพื้นที่ประมาณ 350 ไร่ ต่อมาได้แบ่งพื้นที่บางส่วนให้หน่วยงานอื่น ปัจจุบันมีพื้นที่ทั้งหมด 237 ไร่ 3 งาน 37 ตารางวา
โรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูกสิกรรมมณฑลอุดรต่อมาได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “โรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูมณฑลอุดร” เปิดสอนหลักสูตรประกาศนียบัตรครูมูล เช่นเดิม ในปี พ.ศ. 2473 ทางการได้จัดตั้งโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูสตรีประกาศนียบัตรมณฑลอุดรขึ้น รับนักเรียนสตรีที่สอบไล่ได้ชั้นประถมศึกษา เข้าเรียนต่อในหลักสูตรประกาศนียบัตรมณฑล ปี พ.ศ. 2477 ได้เปิดสอนหลักสูตรประกาศนียบัตรจังหวัด (ว.) โดยรับนักเรียนที่จบชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 3 หรือ ประโยคครูประชาบาล (ป.บ.) เข้าศึกษาต่ออีก 2 ปี และเปิดรับนักเรียนชายเข้าเรียน หลักสูตรประกาศนียบัตรจังหวัด ภายหลัง การเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองแผ่นดิน พ.ศ. 2475 โรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูมณฑลอุดรได้เปลี่ยนชื่อใหม่เป็น “โรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูจังหวัดอุดรธานี”
ปี พ.ศ. 2482 มีประกาศกระทรวงธรรมการยุบโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูจังหวัดอุดรธานี โอนไปสังกัดโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูประกาศนียบัตร จังหวัดอุดรธานีกรมสามัญศึกษา กระทรวงธรรมการ เปิดสอนหลักสูตรมัธยมศึกษาพิเศษ 1 โดยรับนักเรียนที่จบชั้นประถมปีที่ 4 เข้าศึกษาต่อเพื่อส่งไปเป็นครูในท้องถิ่นทุรกันดาร เพื่อแก้ปัญหาการขาดแคลนครู
ปี พ.ศ. 2491 กรมสามัญศึกษาได้ส่งสำเนาประกาศกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ แจ้งเรื่องการเปลี่ยนชื่อ โรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูประกาศนียบัตรจังหวัดอุดรธานี เป็นโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครู อุดรธานี ปี พ.ศ. 2501 กรมการฝึกหัดครูได้จัดสรรงบประมาณจำนวนหนึ่ง ย้ายโรงเรียนสตรีฝึกหัดครูอุดรธานี มารวมกับโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูอุดรธานีและให้ใช้ชื่อเรียกรวมกันว่า “โรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูอุดรธานี” และแต่งตั้งให้ นายศิริ สุขกิจ ศึกษานิเทศก์เอก ดำรงตำแหน่งอาจารย์ใหญ่
ต่อมากระทรวงศึกษาธิการได้ประกาศยกฐานะโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูอุดรธานีเป็น “วิทยาลัยครูอุดรธานี” เมื่อวันที่ 29 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2503 พร้อมกับเปิดสอนในหลักสูตร ประกาศนียบัตรวิชาการศึกษาชั้นสูง (ป.กศ. สูง) ตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2503 เป็นต้นมา
พระราชบัญญัติวิทยาลัยครู พ.ศ. 2518 กำหนดให้วิทยาลัยครูอุดรธานีเป็นสถาบันอุดมศึกษา สังกัดกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ เปิดสอนถึงระดับปริญญาตรี และเปิดสอนนักศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรีสาขาครุศาสตร์ หลักสูตร สภาการฝึกหัดครู พ.ศ. 2519 ทำให้เกิดคณะวิชาครุศาสตร์ คณะวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์ และคณะวิชามนุษยศาสตร์และสังคมศาสตร์ และในปี พ.ศ. 2520 วิทยาลัยครูอุดรธานีได้ร่วมกับวิทยาลัยครูอีก 7 แห่ง ในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ดำเนินงานต่าง ๆ ร่วมกันในนามกลุ่มวิทยาลัยครูภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ซึ่งต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2528 มีการแก้ไขเพิ่มเติมพระราชบัญญัติวิทยาลัยครู พ.ศ. 2518 (ฉบับที่ 2) พ.ศ. 2527 กำหนดให้วิทยาลัยครูรวมกันเป็นกลุ่มและสภาฝึกหัดครูได้ออกข้อบังคับ ว่าด้วยกลุ่มวิทยาลัยครู พ.ศ. 2528 เป็นผลให้วิทยาลัยครู 4 แห่ง ในภาคอีสานตอนบนรวมกันเป็น สหวิทยาลัยอีสานเหนือ มีสำนักงานตั้งอยู่ที่ี่วิทยาลัยครูอุดรธานี และผลจากการ แก้ไขพระราชบัญญัตินี้เอง วิทยาลัยได้เปิดสอนระดับปริญญาตรีในสาขาอื่น ๆ นอกเหนือจากสาขาวิชาการศึกษาและได้จัดตั้งคณะวิทยาการจัดการขึ้นอีกคณะหนึ่ง
เมื่อวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2535 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานชื่อ “สถาบันราชภัฏ” ให้กับวิทยาลัยครูทั่วประเทศ ครั้นต่อมา เมื่อวันที่ 6 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2538 มีพระมหากรุณาธิคุณต่อชาวราชภัฏเป็นล้นพ้นด้วยทรงพระเมตตา โปรดกล้าฯ พระราชทานพระราชลัญจกรประจำพระองค์ให้เป็น “สัญลักษณ์ประจำสถาบัน ราชภัฏ” นับเป็นมหาสิริมงคลอันควรที่ชาวราชภัฏทั้งมวล จักได้ภาคภูมิใจ และพร้อมใจกันปฏิบัติหน้าที่สนองพระมหากรุณาธิคุณให้เต็มความสามารถ ในอันที่จะพัฒนาสถาบันราชภัฏให้เป็น สถาบันอุดมศึกษา เพื่อการพัฒนาท้องถิ่นอย่างแท้จริง
