เมื่อกล่าวถึงคำว่าอาเซียน หลายคนคงรับทราบแล้วว่าในปีพุทธศักราช 2558 หรือคริสศักราช 2015 ประเทศไทยและ อีก 9 ประเทศในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้จะรวมกันเพื่อความเป็นหนึ่งและมั่นคงทางภูมิภาค และที่ได้ยินเรียกกันบ่อยครั้ง เป็นภาษาอังกฤษว่า "AEC” คืออะไร ขออธิบายเพื่อความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับคำว่าอาเซียนดังนี้
อาเซียน คือ สมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ (Association of South East AsianNations หรือ ASEAN) โดยการจัดตั้งในครั้งแรกมีจุดประสงค์เพื่อ ส่งเสริมและร่วมมือในเรื่องสันติภาพ,ความมั่นคง, เศรษฐกิจ, องค์ความรู้, สังคมวัฒนธรรม บนพื้นฐานความเท่าเทียมกันและผลประโยชน์ร่วมกันของประเทศสมาชิก โดย อาเซียน ได้ก่อตั้งขึ้นโดย ปฏิญญากรุงเทพ (Bangkok Declaration) เมื่อวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม พ.ศ.2510 โดยมีผู้ร่วมก่อตั้ง 5 ประเทศคือ 1.ไทย 2.สิงคโปร์ 3.มาเลเซีย 4.ฟิลิปปินส์ 5.อินโดนีเซีย
คำขวัญอาเซียน คือ หนึ่งวิสัยทัศน์, หนึ่งอัตลักษณ์, หนึ่งประชาคม (One Vision, One Identity, One Community)
สัญลักษณ์อาเซียน เป็น รูปรวงข้าวสีเหลืองบนพื้นสีแดงล้อมรอบด้วยวงกลมวีขาวและสีน้ำเงินรวงข้าว 10 ต้น มัดรวมกันไว้ หมายถึงประเทศสมาชิกรวมกันเพื่อมิตรภาพ และความเป็นหนึ่งในวงกลม ซึ่งสีแดง สีขาว สีน้ำเงิน แสดงถึงความเป็นเอกภาพมีอักษรคำว่า "asean” สีน้ำเงิน อยู่ใต้ภาพรวงข้าวแสดงถึงความมุ่งมั่นที่จะทำงานร่วมกันเพื่อความมั่นคง สันติภาพ เอกภาพ และ ความก้าวหน้าของประเทศสมาชิกอาเซียน สีน้ำเงิน หมายถึง สันติภาพและความมั่นคง สีเหลือง หมายถึง ความเจริญรุ่งเรือง สีแดงหมายถึง ความกล้าหาญ สีขาว หมายถึง ความบริสุทธิ์
อาเซียน รวมตัวกันเพื่อ ความร่วมมือกันทางการเมือง ความมั่นคง เศรษฐกิจ และวัฒนธรรม และได้มีการพัฒนาการเรื่อยมา จนถึงขณะนี้ที่เรามีกฎบัตรอาเซียน (ธรรมนูญ อาเซียน หรือ ASEAN Charter) ซึ่งเป็นเสมือนแนวทางการดำเนินงานที่จะนำไปสู่การเป็นประชาคมอาเซียนซึ่งประกอบด้วย 3 สิ่งหลักๆ คือ 1.การเมืองความมั่นคง (Socio-Cultural Pillar) 2.เศรษฐกิจ (Asean Economic Community:AEC) 3.สังคมและวัฒนธรรม (Political and Security Pillar)ซึ่งทั้งหมดนี้ก็มีพัฒนาการไปด้วยกัน โดยเหตุที่คนส่วนใหญ่มักจะพูดถึงแต่ AEC ซึ่งก็คือด้านเศรษฐกิจหรือประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน คงเป็นเพราะว่าเรื่องเศรษฐกิจเป็นเรื่องที่ดูจะจับต้องได้มากกว่าเรื่องอื่นๆ อีกทั้งในการขับเคลื่อนส่วนใหญ่แล้วที่มักจะก้าวไปเร็วกว่าส่วนอื่นๆ ก็คือภาคธุรกิจ ดังนั้น คนอาจจะรับรู้เรื่อง AEC มากกว่ามิติความร่วมมืออื่นๆ ของอาเซียน ในด้านมิติอื่นๆด้วยเพื่อให้รู้ทันและวางแผนเพื่อการปรับตัวให้อยู่อย่างมีความสุข
