ประวัติจังหวัดลำปาง

        จังหวัดลำปาง เป็นจังหวัดที่มีอายุเก่าแก่ไม่น้อยกว่า 1,300 ปี มีชื่อเรียกขานกันหลายชื่อ ซึ่งปรากฏหลักฐานตามตำนานต่าง ๆ รวม 11 ชื่อ ได้แก่ กุกกุฏนคร ลัมภกับปะนคร ศรีนครชัย นครเวียงคอกวัว เวียงดิน เขลางค์นคร นครลำปางคำเขลางค์ อาลัมภางค์ เมืองลคร และเมืองนครลำปาง จากการที่เรียกขานกันว่า “ กุกกุฏนคร ” แปลว่าเมืองไก่ ดังนั้น ตราประจำจังหวัดลำปาง คือ “ ไก่ขาว ”
       จังหวัดลำปาง สร้างเมื่อ พ.ศ.1223 จากหนังสือพงศาวดารโยนกกล่าวว่า “ สุพรหมฤาษี ” สร้างเมืองเพื่อให้ เจ้าอนันตยศ โอรสพระนางจามเทวี ครองคู่กับเมืองหริภุญชัย (ลำพูน) ให้ชื่อเมืองว่า “ นครเขลางค์ ” ต่อมาเปลี่ยนเป็น “ นครอัมภางค์ ” และเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “ นครลำปาง ” ในภายหลัง
      ในสมัยโยนกเชียงแสน นครลำปางเคยตกอยู่ภายใต้อำนาจของขอม เคยเป็นเมืองประเทศราชของพม่าและเมืองเชียงใหม่ ในสมัยพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรี “ เจ้าทิพย์ช้าง ” สามารถขับไล่พวกพม่าออกจากเมืองลำปางได้สำเร็จ จึงได้รับการสถาปนาเป็น “ พระยาสุวลือไชยสงคราม ” ขึ้นครองนครลำปางในปี พ.ศ.2279
      ในปี พ.ศ.2307 “ เจ้าแก้วฟ้า ” พระโอรสของเจ้าทิพย์ช้างได้ขึ้นครองนครลำปาง และเป็นต้นตระกูล ณ ลำปาง ณ ลำพูน รวมทั้ง ณ เชียงใหม่ ในเวลาต่อมา และมี “ เจ้าบุญวาทย์วงศ์มานิต ” เป็นผู้ครองนครลำปางองค์สุดท้าย
       จังหวัดลำปางได้ประกาศจัดตั้งเป็นจังหวัด ในปี พ.ศ.2435 (สมัยรัชกาลที่ 5) โดยขึ้นอยู่กับมณฑลพายับสมัยหนึ่ง (พ.ศ.2443) ต่อมาแยกเป็นมณฑลมหาราษฎร์ ในปี พ.ศ.2458 ซึ่งในเวลาต่อมาได้มีประกาศยกเลิกมณฑลทั่วราชอาณาจักร ลำปางจึงมีฐานะเป็น “ จังหวัดลำปาง ” ตามพระราชบัญญัติระเบียบบริหารราชการอาณาจักรสยาม พ.ศ.2476
