แบดมินตัน นับได้ว่าเป็นกีฬาอีกหนึ่งประเภทที่ได้รับความนิยมอย่างแพร่หลาย ทั้งนี้ เนื่องจากเป็นกีฬาที่ใช้อุปกรณ์การเล่นน้อยชิ้น เพียงแค่มีไม้แร็คเกตและลูกขนไก่ รวมถึงผู้เล่นเพียง 2 คน ก็สามารถเล่นได้แล้ว อีกทั้งยังเป็นกีฬาสบาย ๆ เหมาะสำหรับผู้ที่ไม่ต้องการออกกำลังกายอย่างหักโหมเกินไปดังนั้น จึงไม่น่าแปลกใจเลยว่าเหตุใดผู้คนการเล่นแบดมินตันจึงแพร่หลายไปสู่คนทั่วโลกจนกระทั่งได้กลายเป็นกีฬาสากลที่ทั่วโลกยอมรับ และวันนี้เราก็มีเกร็ดความรู้เกี่ยวกับประวัติความเป็นมาของกีฬาแบดมินตันมาฝาก
การเล่นแบดมินตันได้เข้ามาสู่ประเทศไทยในราวปี พ.ศ. 2456 โดยเริ่มเล่นกีฬาแบดมินตันแบบมีตาข่ายโดยพระยานิพัทยกุลพงษ์ ได้สร้างสนามขึ้นที่บ้านซึ่งตั้งอยู่ริมคลองสมเด็จเจ้าพระยาธนบุรีแล้วนิยมเล่นกันอย่างแพร่หลายออกไป ส่วนมากเล่นกันตามบ้านผู้ดีมีตระกูลวังเจ้านาย และในราชสำนัก การเล่นแบดมินตันครั้งนั้น นิยมเล่นข้างละ 3 คนกันมาก ประมาณปี พ.ศ. 2462 สโมสรกลาโหมได้เป็นผู้จัดแข่งขันแบดมินตันทั่วไปขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกโดยจัดการแข่งขัน 3 ประเภทได้แก่ประเภทเดี่ยว ประเภทคู่ และประเภทสามคนปรากฏว่าทีมแบดมินตันบางขวางนนทบุรี (โรงเรียนราชวิทยาลัยบางขวางนนทบุรี)ชนะเลิศทุกประเภทนอกจากนี้มีนักกีฬาแบดมินตันฝีมือดีเดินทางไปแข่งขันยังประเทศใกล้เคียงอยู่บ่อยๆ
ต่อมาปี พ.ศ. 2494 พระยาจินดารักษ์ได้ก่อตั้งขึ้นเป็นสมาคมชื่อว่า"สมาคมแบดมินตันแห่งประเทศไทย" เมื่อแรกตั้งมีอยู่ 7 สโมสร คือสโมสรสมานมิตร สโมสรบางกอก สโมสรนิวบอย สโมสรยูนิตี้ สโมสร ส.ธรรมภักดีสโมสรสิงห์อุดม และสโมสรศิริบำเพ็ญบุญซึ่งในปัจจุบันนี้เหลือเป็นสโมสรสมาชิกของสมาคมอยู่เพียง 2 สโมสรคือสโมสรนิวบอย และสโมสรยูนิตี้เท่านั้น และในปีเดียวกันสมาคมแบดมินตันแห่งประเทศไทยก็ได้สมัครเข้าเป็นสมาชิกของสหพันธ์แบดมินตันนานาชาติด้วยสมาคมแบดมินตันแห่งประเทศไทยมีนักกีฬาแบดมินตันที่มีฝีมือดีอยู่มากและจากการที่ได้เข้าแข่งขันในรายการต่างๆของโลกได้สร้างชื่อเสียงให้กับประเทศไทยเป็นอย่างมาก ทั้งโธมัสคัพ อูเบอร์คัพ และการแข่งขันออลอิงแลนด์ซึ่งวงการแบดมินตันถือว่าเป็นการแข่งขันชิงชนะเลิศของโลกประเภทรายบุคคลซึ่งนักกีฬาของประเทศไทยก็เคยได้ตำแหน่งรองชนะเลิศทั้งประเภทชายเดี่ยวและชายคู่มาแล้ว

กติกาของกีฬาแบดมินตันเบื้องต้น

ระบบการนับคะแนน
1 แมทช์หนึ่งต้องชนะให้ได้มากที่สุดใน 3 เกม เว้นแต่จะได้กำหนดเป็นอย่างอื่น
2 ในประเภทชายคู่และประเภทชายเดี่ยว ฝ่ายที่ได้ 15 คะแนนก่อนเป็นฝ่ายชนะในเกมนั้น ในประเภทหญิง2-3 เดี่ยว หญิงคู่ คู่ผสม ฝ่ายที่ได้ 11 คะแนนก่อนเป็นฝ่ายชนะในเกมนั้น
4 ฝ่ายส่งลูกเท่านั้น เป็นฝ่ายได้คะแนน
5 ถ้าได้ 14 คะแนนเท่ากัน (10 คะแนนเท่ากันในประเภทหญิงเดี่ยว หญิงคู่ คู่ผสม) ฝ่ายที่ได้ 14 (10) คะแนน
6 ต่อเกมนั้นถึง 15 (11) คะแนน กล่าวคือ ไม่เล่นต่อ ในเกมนั้น หรือ
7 เล่นต่อ เกมนั้นถึง 17 (13) คะแนน
8 ฝ่ายชนะ เป็นฝ่ายส่งลูกก่อนในเกมต่อไป
สนามและอุปกรณ์
