เมื่อวันที่ ๖ เมษายน พ.ศ. ๒๓๒๕ เป็นวันที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช (ร.๑) เสด็จปราบดาภิเษก ขึ้นครองราชย์เป็น กษัตริย์แห่งราชวงศ์จักรี และทรงสร้างกรุงเทพมหานครขึ้นเป็นเมืองหลวงของไทย มาจนถึงทุกวันนี้ ด้วยพระมหากรุณาธิคุณดังกล่าว ในปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๑๖ พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว (ร.๕) จึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้หล่อพระบรมรูปของพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทั้ง ๔ พระองค์ (ร.๑ – ร.๔) เพื่อประดิษฐานไว้ให้พระมหากษัตริย์องค์ต่อๆ มา พระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ ข้าราชการ และประชาชนได้ถวายบังคมสักการะ โดยเป็นการระลึกถึงพระมหากรุณาธิคุณ เป็นธรรมเนียมปีละครั้ง และได้โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้อัญเชิญไปประดิษฐานไว้บนพระที่นั่งดุสิตมหาปราสาท และมีการย้ายที่หลายครั้ง เช่น พระที่นั่งพุทไธสวรรย์ปราสาท และ พระที่นั่งศิวาลัยปราสาท เป็นต้น
