บวชลูกแก้ว หรือปอยส่างลอง หมายถึง ประเพณีบรรพชาเป็นสามเณรในพระพุทธศาสนา ซึ่งพบเห็นกันตั้งแต่จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน โดยเฉพาะในเขตอำเภอขุนยวม อำเภอปาย จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน และผู้ที่เข้าร่วมประเพณีนี้สืบเชื้อสายมาจากไทใหญ่

ในช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 เกิดความขัดแข้งกันในวงกว้าง ครอบคลุมทุกทวีปและประเทศส่วนใหญ่รวมทั้งประเทศไทยในปี พ.ศ. 2482 (ค.ศ. 1938) สิ้นสุดในปี พ.ศ. 2488 (ค.ศ. 1945) ผลจากการประสบปัญหาต่างๆ ทั้งด้านการเมือง เศรษฐกิจและสังคม ทำให้ประเพณีปอยส่างลองงดและเลิกไปในทีุ่สุด กระทั่งเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2525 ซึ่งเป็นปีที่ไทยฉลอง
กรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ครอบ 200 ปี จึงมีการฟื้นฟูและจัดงานประเพณีปอยส่างลองหรือบวชลูกแก้วขยายไปถึงจังหวัดเชียงรายและเชียงใหม่ด้วย

งานบวชลูกแก้ว เป็นพิธีเฉลิมฉลองการบรรพชาสามเณรในศาสนาพุทธ จัดงานประมาณ 3 วัน หรือ 5 – 7 วัน นิยมจัดในช่วงปลายเดือนมีนาคมหรือเดือนเมษายน เป็นช่วงที่ชาวบ้านเว้นว่างจากทำนาทำไร่ และปิดเทอม ในการบรรพชาเป็นสามเณรครั้งนั้นก็เพื่อศึกษาพุทธธรรมเป็นการทดแทนคุณบิดามารดา ก่อนถึงวันส่างลองหนึ่งวัน เด็กผู้ชายที่เข้าร่วมต้องปลงผมและอาบน้ำ เจิมด้วยน้ำหอม แต่งกายด้วยชุดเสื้อผ้าเครื่องประดับต่างๆ อย่างอลังการ
