สมเด็จพระเทพรัตน์ราชสุดาสยามบรมราชกุมารี ทรงสนพระทัยการอ่านและการพัฒนาห้องสมุด ทรงรับสมาคมห้องสมุดแห่งประเทศไทยฯไว้ในพระราชูปถัมภ์ เมื่อวันที่2 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2519 หลายโอกาสที่เสด็จพระราชดำเนินต่างประเทศ ได้เสด็จเยี่ยมและทรงดูงานห้องสมุดชั้นนำหลายแห่ง ซึ่งได้พระราชทานข้อแนะนำแก่สมาคมห้องสมุดแห่งประเทศไทยฯ และบรรณารักษ์ไทยในการนำความรู้ไปพัฒนาห้องสมุดโรงเรียนและห้องสมุดประชาชนรวมทั้งห้องสมุดประชาชนเฉลิมราชกุมารีที่เป็นแหล่งเรียนรู้เพื่อขยายโอกาสให้ประชนในการพัฒนาการรู้หนังสือ นอกจากนี้ยังทรงพระกรุณาเสด็จพระราชดำเนินเป็นองค์ประธานในการประชุมสามัญประจำปีของสมาคมห้องสมุดแห่งประเทศไทยฯเสมอมา รวมทั้งได้เสด็จพระราชดำเนินแทนพระองค์พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงเป็นประธานในโอกาสที่ประเทศไทยเป็นเจ้าภาพการประชุมสมาพันธ์สมาคมห้องสมุดฯนานาชาติ (IFLA) และมีพระราชดำรัสเปิดการประชุม IFLA ครั้งที่ 65 ที่กรุงเทพมหานครในปี 1999
