จากประสบการณ์ครูสอนภาษาอังกฤษในโรงเรียนหนองรีประชานิมิต โรงเรียนมัธยมประจำตำบลหนองรี ในอำเภอบ่อพลอย จังหวัดกาญจนบุรี ปัญหาหลักที่ อาจารย์ขจิต ฝอยทอง ประสบในการจัดการเรียนการสอนคือทัศนคติแง่ลบต่อการเรียนรู้ภาษาอังกฤษของนักเรียน

จากการทำแบบสอบถามนักเรียนจำนวน 715 คน เกี่ยวกับการเรียนการสอนภาษาอังกฤษ พบว่า นักเรียนร้อยละ 70 ขาดแรงจูงใจในการเรียนและคิดว่าวิชาภาษาอังกฤษเป็นเรื่องที่น่าเบื่อ เรียนแล้วไม่เข้าใจ หรือไม่ชอบเรียน ในขณะเดียวกันร้อยละ 80 ขาดความมั่นใจในการพูดและเขียนภาษาอังกฤษ เพราะแทบจะไม่ได้นำความรู้ไปใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน เกิดความรู้สึกว่าภาษาอังกฤษเป็นเรื่องไกลตัว เนื่องจากสถานที่ตั้งของโรงเรียนอยู่ในชนบทค่อนข้างห่างไกลตัวอำเภอ และไม่ใช่แหล่งท่องเที่ยว ขณะที่พ่อแม่ผู้ปกครองส่วนใหญ่มีอาชีพรับจ้างหรือเป็นเกษตรกร ไม่มีความรู้ด้านภาษาอังกฤษ โอกาสที่เด็กๆ จะฝึกทักษะการสื่อสารด้วยภาษาอังกฤษนอกห้องเรียนแทบจะไม่มี

"ทัศนคติด้านลบและบริบทของสังคมที่ไม่เอื้อให้เด็กได้ฝึกทักษะภาษาอังกฤษ มีผลต่อการเรียนรู้ภาษาอังกฤษของเด็กๆ ที่อยู่ในชทบท อย่างภาคเรียนที่ผ่านมานักเรียนร้อยละ 60 มีผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางการเรียนค่อนข้างต่ำ" อาจารย์ขจิต กล่าว

การจัดการเรียนการสอนภาษาอังกฤษสำหรับนักเรียนชั้น ม.1 อาจารย์ขจิตจึงต้องปรับเปลี่ยนเจตคติเกี่ยวกับการเรียนรู้ภาษาอังกฤษของเด็กๆ เสียใหม่ โดยสำรวจความคิดเห็นนักเรียนว่าต้องการกิจกรรมการเรียนรู้ภาษาอังกฤษในรูปแบบใด และจัดกิจกรรมให้สอดคล้องกับความต้องการของเด็กส่วนใหญ่ที่สนใจจะเรียนรู้ภาษาอังกฤษอย่างสนุกสนาน เช่น เล่นเกม ร้องเพลง และกิจกรรมกลางแจ้งอื่นๆ รวมทั้งมีโอกาสฝึกสื่อสารด้วยภาษาอังกฤษ

ค่าย "English Camp" เป็นกิจกรรมรูปแบบหนึ่งที่อาจารย์ขจิตจัดขึ้น โดยพักค้างแรม 1 คืน 2 วัน ที่โรงเรียน ตลอดระยะเวลาที่อยู่ในค่ายทุกคนจะต้องสื่อสารเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ การดำเนินกิจกรรมต่างๆ เน้นฝึกทักษะฟัง พูด อ่าน และเขียน ท่ามกลางบรรยากาศสนุกสนาน หวังสร้างแรงจูงใจใฝ่รู้ของผู้เรียนเป็นลำดับตามมา โดยได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากมูลนิธิ Greenway International Work Camp ส่งอาสาสมัครวิทยากรชาวต่างประเทศมาร่วมจัดกิจกรรม

ลักษณะกิจกรรมต่างๆ เป็นการปรับความรู้เดิมด้านภาษาอังกฤษของนักเรียน ผ่านการฝึกทักษะทั้ง 4 ด้าน เน้นการทำงานร่วมกันเป็นทีมเพื่อสร้างความคุ้นเคย ในที่นี่ขอนำเสนอตัวอย่างกิจกรรมฝึกทักษะการฟัง พูด อ่าน และเขียน ที่จัดขึ้นในค่ายเพียงบางส่วนสำหรับเป็นแนวทางให้ครูที่สนใจนำไปประยุกต์ใช้ตามความเหมาะสม

กิจกรรมฝึกทักษะการอ่าน แบ่งนักเรียนเป็นกลุ่ม กลุ่มละ 5-7 คน แข่งกันเล่นเกม Treasure hunt โดยอ่านคำสั่งจากใบงานที่ครูแจกให้ ซึ่งสั่งให้ไปหาสิ่งของต่างๆ ที่ซ่อนไว้ตามจุดต่างๆ ภายในบริเวณโรงเรียน กลุ่มไหนค้นพบสิ่งของจนครบทุกชิ้นก่อนเป็นผู้ชนะ ตัวอย่างเช่น
