ธงไชย แมคอินไตย์ เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 8 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2501 มีชื่อภาษาอังกฤษว่า "อัลเบิร์ท แมคอินไตย์" (Albert McIntyre) เป็นบุตรคนที่ 9 ในจำนวนพี่น้อง 10 คน ของคุณพ่อเจมส์ และคุณแม่อุดม (ปินอับดุลรามัน) แมคอินไตย์ โดยครอบครัว แมคอินไตย์ อาศัยอยู่ในบ้านหลังเล็กๆท้ายสวนย่านบางแค จังหวัดกรุงเทพฯ
