เมอร์ไลออน ถูกออกแบบขึ้นเพื่อเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของคณะกรรมการการท่องเที่ยวของสิงคโปร์ (Singapore Tourism Board - STB) ในปี 1964 – รูปปั้นนี้มีหัวเป็นสิงโต ร่างเป็นปลา ยืนอยู่บนยอดคลื่น ต่อมาไม่นานทั่วโลกก็ถือกันว่าสิงโตทะเลตัวนี้คือเครื่องหมายประจำชาติสิงคโปร์
