There are many situations in which we have the choice to tell the truth or to lie. So is it always best to tell the truth, or are there situations in which it is better to lie?
God tells us not to lie. It is one of the Ten Commandments. So, that being said, we should not lie at all.
But what if you’re best friend was really happy about a dress she was wearing, but it didn’t look good at all? Would you tell her she looked good even if she didn’t or tell her the truth, but risk hurting her feelings?
My dad once told me what to do if I ever got bullied or called names. He said that if someone called you fat, and it was true, the reply should be something like “Yes, I am fat.” And then walk away. But if they call you fat and you’re not, the response should be “No, I’m not fat. You are telling a lie.” And then you walk away. After all, they’re just words. The only difference is if it’s true or not.
It does hurt to hear someone say that you don’t look good in something, or that you’re not good at something. But if people lie to us and say, “Oh, you look great!” or “Oh, that’s so amazing, you’re so good at that!” we would never improve. We would think that we looked great or really good at something. So while the truth does hurt sometimes, it is better to tell the truth than to lie.
