ชาวเมี่ยน (เย้า) ถิ่นฐานเดิมอยู่ในประเทศจีนแถบแม่น้ำแยงซี จีนเรียกขานว่า เย้า แปลว่า ป่าเถื่อน“เมี่ยน”เป็นชื่อที่ทางราชการตั้งให้ หรือบางครั้งจะเรียกว่า“อิ้วเมี่ยน” แปลว่ามนุษย์ การอพยพโยกย้าย ของเผ่าเมี่ยน 12 สกุล ลงมาทางใต้ประมาณศตวรรษที่ 15 -16 เข้าสู่เวียดนาม ผ่านลาว และเข้ามาทางตอนเหนือของประเทศไทย เข้ามาอยู่ในประเทศไทยในราว 100 ปีเศษที่ผ่านมา
