ประเทศไทยถือเป็นผู้ริเริ่มและผู้นำในบทบาทของอาเซียนในด้านต่างๆ รวมถึงการริเริ่มผลักดันให้เกิด AEC ขึ้น โดยทุกๆ รัฐบาลที่ผ่านมาได้ดำเนินนโยบายที่สนับสนุนกิจกรรมของอาเซียนมาโดยตลอด ล่าสุดในการแถลงนโยบายของรัฐบาลนายกรัฐมนตรีนางสาวยิ่งลักษณ์ ชินวัตร ต่อรัฐสภา เมื่อวันที่ 23 สิงหาคม 2554 ได้แถลงนโยบายหลัก 3 ข้อ ได้แก่
1.) นำพาประเทศเข้าสู่ความเข้มแข็งสมดุล
2.) การนำพาประเทศเข้าสู่สังคมปรองดองบนพื้นฐานของหลักนิติธรรมที่เท่าเทียมกัน
3.) นำพาประเทศเข้าสู่ประชาคมอาเซียน (AEC) ในปี 2558
จะเห็นได้ว่ารัฐบาลให้ความสำคัญกับการเตรียมความพร้อมเพื่อเข้าสู่ AEC ในปี 2558 โดยจัดให้เป็นเรื่องเร่งด่วนที่ต้องได้รับการสนับสนุนอย่างเต็มรูปแบบ จึงพบว่าในปัจจุบัน หน่วยงานทั้งภาครัฐ เอกชน ประชาชน ทุกภาคส่วน ทุกองคาพยพต่างมีความตื่นตัวเพื่อหาความรู้ความเข้าใจ และสำรวจตนเองเพื่อนำไปสู่การเตรียมความพร้อมในการเข้าสู่ประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอา เซียน กระแสความตื่นตัวในครั้งนี้จะเกิดขึ้นต่อเนื่องยาวนานไปจนกว่าจะสามารถปรับ ตัวรับความเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้นได้ ซึ่งคงกินเวลาอีกหลายปี
