เมื่อวันที่ ๖ เมษายน พ.ศ. ๒๓๒๕ เป็นวันที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช (ร.๑) เสด็จปราบดาภิเษก ขึ้นครองราชย์เป็น กษัตริย์แห่งราชวงศ์จักรี และทรงสร้างกรุงเทพมหานครขึ้นเป็นเมืองหลวงของไทย มาจนถึงทุกวันนี้ ด้วยพระมหากรุณาธิคุณดังกล่าว ในปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๑๖ พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว (ร.๕) จึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้หล่อพระบรมรูปของพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทั้ง ๔ พระองค์ (ร.๑ – ร.๔) เพื่อประดิษฐานไว้ให้พระมหากษัตริย์องค์ต่อๆ มา พระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ ข้าราชการ และประชาชนได้ถวายบังคมสักการะ โดยเป็นการระลึกถึงพระมหากรุณาธิคุณ เป็นธรรมเนียมปีละครั้ง และได้โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้อัญเชิญไปประดิษฐานไว้บนพระที่นั่งดุสิตมหาปราสาท และมีการย้ายที่หลายครั้ง เช่น พระที่นั่งพุทไธสวรรย์ปราสาท และ พระที่นั่งศิวาลัยปราสาท เป็นต้น

ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๖ นั้น โปรดให้ย้ายพระบรมรูปทั้ง ๔ ( ร.๑ – ร.๔ ) มาไว้ ณ ปราสาทพระเทพบิดร ในวัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม พร้อมกับพระบรมรูปของรัชกาลที่ ๕ พระชนกนาถ พระที่นั่งองค์นี้ รัชกาลที่ ๖ โปรดให้ซ่อมจากพุทธปรางค์ปราสาทเพื่อเรื่องนี้โดยเฉพาะ และได้พระราชทานนามดังกล่าว การซ่อมแซมก่อสร้างและประดิษฐานพระบรมรูปทั้ง ๕ รัชกาล สำเร็จลุล่วงในเดือนเมษายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๖๑ จึงได้มีพระบรมราชโองการ ประกาศตั้งพระราชพิธีถวายบังคมพระบรมรูป ในวันที่ ๖ เมษายนปีนั้น และต่อมา โปรดฯ ให้เรียกวันที่ ๖ เมษายนว่าเป็น “วันจักรี”
