สัญลักษณ์ หรือ เครื่องหมาย (Symbol)

สัญลักษณ์ หรือ เครื่องหมาย (Symbol) โดยพื้นฐานหมายถึง สิ่งที่ใช้แทนความหมายของอีกสิ่งหนึ่ง หรือถ้าจะกล่าวให้ลึกลงไปอีก สัญลักษณ์ หมายถึง วัตถุ อักษร รูปร่าง หรือสีสัน ซึ่งใช้ในการสื่อความหมายหรือแนวความคิดให้มนุษย์เข้าใจไปในทางเดียวกัน

สัญลักษณ์นั้นช่วยในการสื่อสาร อาจจะเป็นรูปภาพ การเขียนอักษร การออกเสียง หรือการทำท่าทาง ซึ่งช่วยให้ผู้ส่งสารและผู้รับสารเข้าใจตรงกันแม้จะพูดกันคนละภาษา แต่ขึ้นอยู่กับประสบการณ์ของทั้งสองฝ่ายว่า ผู้ส่งสารมีความสามารถใช้สัญลักษณ์ให้สื่อความหมายมากเพียงใด และผู้รับสารมีความเข้าใจในสัญลักษณ์ที่ใช้มากเพียงใด ดังนั้นภาษามือจึงจัดว่าเป็นสัญลักษณ์อย่างหนึ่งเช่นกัน
