อำเภอท่ามะกาเป็นอำเภอที่อยู่ทางตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ของจังหวัด อยู่ห่างจากกรุงเทพมหานครประมาณ 97 กิโลเมตร และห่างจากอำเภอเมืองกาญจนบุรี 30 กิโลเมตร มีอาณาเขตติดต่อกับพื้นที่การปกครองข้างเคียงต่อไปนี้
ทิศเหนือ จรดอำเภอพนมทวน และอำเภอสองพี่น้อง (จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี)
ทิศตะวันออก จรดอำเภอกำแพงแสน (จังหวัดนครปฐม) และอำเภอบ้านโป่ง (จังหวัดราชบุรี)

ประวัติศาสตร์[แก้]

จากการบันทึกของนักประวัติศาสตร์ ชื่อ สถิต เลิศวิชัย ได้บันทึกไว้ว่าอำเภอท่ามะกานั้น เดิมชื่อ อำเภอลาดบัวขาว ตั้งขี้นเป็นครั้งแรก เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2445 โดยเอาพื้นที่เขตตำบลท่าผา ตำบลธรรมเสน และตำบลลาดบัวขาวรวมกันตั้งเป็น "อำเภอลาดบัวขาว" ในสมัยนั้นยังขึ้นอยู่กับจังหวัดราชบุรี (ขณะนี้ที่ตั้งของอำเภอลาดบัวขาวเดิม เป็นที่ตั้งของวัดลาดบัวขาว อำเภอบ้านโป่ง จังหวัดราชบุรี อยู่ตรงข้ามวัดโกสินารายณ์ คนละฝั่งของแม่น้ำแม่กลองในปัจจุบัน)
ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2446 หรือรัตนโกสินทรศก 124 ทางราชการได้ย้ายที่ตั้งที่ว่าการอำเภอลาดบัวขาวมาตั้งใหม่ที่ตำบลพงตึก และได้เปลี่ยนชื่ออำเภอจากอำเภอลาดบัวขาวเป็น อำเภอพระแท่น ทั้งนี้เพราะในเขตอำเภอมีปูชนียสถานที่สำคัญในทางพระพุทธศาสนา คือ "พระแท่นดงรัง" ซึ่งเป็นที่รู้จักกันดีโดยทั่วไปของชาวพุทธ
ในปี พ.ศ. 2453 สมัยขุนศรีสรนาสน์นิคมหรือมหาจันทร์ ปุญสิริเป็นนายอำเภอ ได้ย้ายที่ว่าการอำเภอพระแท่นจากตำบลพงตึกมาตั้งใหม่ที่หมู่บ้าน "ถ้ำมะกา" ทางด้านฝั่งขวาของแม่น้ำแม่กลอง โดยซื้อที่ดินของขุนอารักษ์อรุณกิจ จำนวน 10 ไร่ 20 ตารางวา เป็นเงิน 120 บาท และที่ดินของนายชื่น จำนวน 2 ไร่ 1 งาน 60 ตารางวา เป็นเงิน 120 บาท รวมเป็นเนื้อที่ของอำเภอ 12 ไร่ 1 งาน 80 ตารางวา ใช้เป็นที่สร้างที่ว่าการอำเภอพระแท่นหลังใหม่ เนื่องจากที่ท่าน้ำหน้าอำเภอมีต้นมะกาต้นใหญ่ ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2460 สมัยขุนรามบุรีรักษ์ (แอร่ม สุนทรศารทูล) เป็นนายอำเภอ จึงได้เปลี่ยนชื่ออำเภอใหม่จากอำเภอพระแท่นเป็น อำเภอท่ามะกา ซึ่งยังคงขึ้นอยู่ท้องที่จังหวัดราชบุรี จนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ. 2480 จึงได้โอนมาขึ้นอยู่กับท้องที่จังหวัดกาญจนบุรีจนถึงปัจจุบัน
