ยาเสพติดเป็นปัญหาใหญ่อย่างมากในสังคมปัจจุบัน เพราะปัจจุบันวัยรุ่นซึ่งถือว่าเป็นอนาคตของชาติได้เข้าไปเกี่ยวข้องกับยาเสพติดมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ กลายเป็นสิ่งที่มีอิทธิพลต่อชีวิตและทรัพย์สินของสังคมส่วนรวมอย่างมาก และยังเป็นปัญหาต่อความมั่นคงของชาติอีกด้วย
วัยรุ่นเป็นวัยที่อยู่ในช่วงหัวเลี้ยวหัวต่อที่จะก้าวผ่านจากวัยเด็กไปสู่ผู้ใหญ่ต่อไป ทำให้บ้างคร้งความคิดเห็นที่เกิดขึ้นกับวัยรุ่นเองแตกต่างออกไปจากผู้ใหญ่ที่มีความรับผิดชอบแล้ว ในขณะเดียวกันวัยรุ่นก็ไม่ใช่เด็กอีกต่อไป สังคมลอบข้างล้วนแปรเปลี่ยนไป สภาพเศรษฐกิจและสังคมที่ต้องแข่งขันกันทำให้ผู้ปกครองไม่มีเวลาอบรมและใกล้ชิดบุตรหลาน จนบางครั้งวัยรุ่นเกิดความรู้สึกสับสน ด้วยวัยที่ด้อยคุณวุฒิและอ่อนประสบการณ์ทำให้หาทางออกด้วยวิธีการที่ผิดในบางครั้ง
ยาเสพติดจะเข้ามีอิทธิพลกับวัยรุ่นเป็นอย่างมากในช่วงเวลานี้ โดยบางครั้งอาจได้รับคำชักชวนจากเพื่อน ในช่วงวัยนี้บุคคลที่มีอิทธิพลต่อวัยรุ่นมากที่สุดก็คือเพื่อน เพราะปัญหาที่ไม่กล้าบอกเล่าหรือไม่ได้รับความสนใจจากผู้ปกครองรวมทั้งครูอาจารย์ คนที่ได้รับความไว้วางใจที่สุดก็คือเพื่อน และเพื่อนก็คือคนที่อยู่ในช่วงอายุใกล้เคียงกันเป็นส่วนใหญ่ ทำให้คำแนะนำที่ได้ก็ไม่ได้ช่วยแก้ปัญหาได้อย่างถูกต้อง บ่อยครั้งคำแนะนำที่ได้ก็คือการหลีกหนีปัญหาโดยการใช้ยาเสพติด โดยเริ่มจากบุหรี่ เหล้า และนำไปสู่ยาเสพติดชนิดต่างๆที่ร้ายแรงขึ้นเรื่อยๆ
สังคมในปัจจุบันคือสังคมที่มาจากการเติบโตของค่านิยมแบบตะวันตก ทำให้วัยรุ่นมีแนวคิดนิยมวัตถุมากขึ้น ทำให้เกิดการใช้จ่ายอย่างฟุ่มเฟือย ความต้องการเป็นที่สนใจของเพศตรงกันข้าม ความผิดหวังในชีวิตเกี่ยวกับเรื่องการเรียน และการปรับตัวให้เข้ากับสังคม ความเครียดเกี่ยวกับปัญหาภายในครอบครัว ฯลฯ ล้วนเป็นปัจจัยผลักดันให้วัยรุ่นเข้าไปเกี่ยวข้องกับยาเสพติด
วัยรุ่นจะเข้าไปเกี่ยวข้องกับยาเสพติดโดยการเริ่มจากาการเป็นผู้เสพ และต่อมาก็จะเข้าไปสู่การเป็นผู้จำหน่าย และเมื่อมีความข้องเกี่ยวไปเรื่อยๆเมื่อโตขึ้นก็จะเข้าไปเกี่ยวข้องกับขบวนการผลิตต่อไปได้ นอกจากนี้ยาเสพติดอาจนำไปสู่การค้าประเวณีเพื่อนำเงินมาซื้อยาเสพติดและใช้จ่ายตามค่านิยมของสังคม
