สะพานเดชาติวงศ์ เริ่มสร้างขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2485 สมัยสงครามมหาเอเชียบูรพาโดยกรมทางหลวง เพื่อใช้เป็นเส้นทางเชื่อมโยงระหว่างภาคกลางและภาคเหนือแทนเส้นทางเรือ มีพิธีเปิดให้ใช้งานเมื่อวันที่ 1 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2493 โดยพันตรี หม่อมหลวงกรี เดชาติวงศ์ อธิบดีกรมทางหลวงในสมัยนั้นเป็นประธานเปิดสะพาน ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2512 กรมทางหลวงได้งบประมาณทางหลวงหมายเลข 32 ตอน บางปะอิน-นครสวรรค์ จึงได้สร้างสะพานขึ้นอีกสะพานหนึ่งคู่กับสะพานเดชาติวงศ์เดิม เรียกว่า สะพานเดชาติวงศ์ 2 เป็นสะพานคอนกรีตเสริมเหล็กคู่ขนานไปกับสะพานเดชาติวงศ์เดิม และเปิดใช้เมื่อวันที่ 23 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2514 ต่อมาได้มีการสร้างสะพานเดชาติวงศ์ 3 เมื่อวันที่ 15 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2532 และสร้างเสร็จและเปิดใช้งานเมื่อวันที่ 9 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2536 ปัจจุบันสะพานเดชาติวงศ์จะเปิดใช้งานเพียง 2 สะพาน คือ สะพานเดชาติวงศ์ 2 และ 3 ส่วนสะพานเดชาติวงศ์ 1 ทางจังหวัดนครสวรรค์จะเปิดให้รถขนาดเล็กสัญจรผ่านเท่านั้น ห้ามรถบรรทุกขนาดใหญ่เด็ดขาด เนื่องจากสะพานเดชาติวงศ์กลางเปิดใช้งานมานานกว่า 60 ปี แม้จะมีการเสริมความแข็งแรงแล้ว แต่สะพานแห่งนี้อาจจะพังลงหากรับน้ำหนักรถบรรทุกขนาดใหญ่มากเกินไป หรือเปิดให้ใช้งานได้ในกรณีฉุกเฉิน เช่น เกิดอุบัติเหตุ การจราจรติดขัด เป็นต้น และในช่วงเทศกาลการจราจรจะหนาแน่นมาก เช่น ช่วงสงกรานต์ ปีใหม่ เป็นต้น นอกจากนี้ทางจังหวัดยังอนุรักษ์ให้เป็นสะพานประวัติศาสตร์ ใช้ในการจัดงานต่างๆของจังหวัด
