ในการวิจัยครั้งนี้ผู้วิจัยได้ศึกษาเอกสารที่และงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับคำศัพท์ การสอนคำศัพท์ กลวิธีการเดาความหมายจากคำศัพท์ การแปลความหมายโดยเสนอผลการศึกษาตามลำดับดังนี้

คำศัพท์
นิยาม
คำศัพท์ถือได้ว่าเป็นองค์ประกอบพื้นฐานของการเรียนรู้ภาษา มีนักการศึกษาได้ให้ความหมายของคำศัพท์ไว้ดังนี้ Morris (1979) ได้ให้ความหมายว่า คำศัพท์ หมายถึง คำทุกคำในภาษาที่ถูกใช้และเป็นที่เข้าใจเฉพาะบุคคล วงสังคม วงการอาชีพ เชื้อชาติต่าง ๆ โดยที่ได้รับการเรียงตามตัวอักษรได้รับการแปลความหมายและบางครั้งอาจมีตัวอย่างประกอบได้ วรชาติ ภู่ทอง (2537) ได้กล่าวว่า คำศัพท์ คือ คำ หรือถ้อยคำ และวลีในภาษาทั้งหมด ที่ใช้เป็นสื่อในการสื่อความหมาย ความรู้ ความคิด ระหว่าง หรือเฉพาะบุคคล กลุ่มสังคมอาชีพ และชนชาติ และพะเยา พรหมเทศ (2549) กล่าวว่า คำศัพท์ คือ คำ หรือกลุ่มคำ ที่ปรากฏในภาษาที่ใช้ในการสื่อความหมาย ความรู้ ความคิด ลักษณะอาการ คน สัตว์ และสิ่งของ ที่เข้าใจในกลุ่มคนที่อยู่ในกลุ่มอาชีพ สังคม และชนชาตินั้นจากความหมายของคำศัพท์ดังกล่าวข้างต้น สรุปได้ว่า คำศัพท์ คือ คำต่าง ๆ ของแต่ละกลุ่มชนที่ใช้ในการสื่อสาร สื่อความหมาย ความคิด ความรู้ ลักษณะของแต่ละบุคคล


ประเภทของคำศัพท์

มีผู้เชี่ยวชาญหลายท่าน ได้ศึกษาเกี่ยวกับประเภทของคำศัพท์ดังนี้ (บำรุง โตรัตน์;2524; อิสรา
สาระงาม, 2529; นันทยา แสงสิน, อ้างใน เดชา เซซ่ง, 2546)
1. คำศัพท์ที่เรียนเพื่อการนำไปใช้ (Active Vocabulary) เป็นคำศัพท์ที่ผู้เรียนมักพบและได้ใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน ซึ่งถือว่าเป็นคำศัพท์ที่เรียนเพื่อที่จะนำไปใช้ในการสื่อสารทั้ง 4ลักษณะ คือ ฟัง พูด อ่าน และ เขียน
2. คำศัพท์ที่เรียนเพื่อรู้ (Passive Vocabulary) เป็นคำศัพท์ที่ผู้เรียนได้เรียนเพื่อให้ทราบและรู้ความหมาย เพื่อที่จะได้ใช้ในการเรียนในระดับสูงขึ้นต่อไปนอกจากนี้ยังได้มีการจำแนกประเภทของคำศัพท์ตามโอกาสที่ได้ใช้หรือพบในแต่ละทักษะภาษา ดังต่อไปนี้
2.1 คำศัพท์เพื่อการฟัง (A person’s listening vocabulary) เป็นคำศัพท์ที่ใช้มากใน
เด็กเล็กเพราะเด็กยังไม่เคยเรียนภาษาอังกฤษมาก่อน หรือเพิ่งจะเริ่มเรียนในการหัดฟัง พูด อ่านและเขียนคำศัพท์จึงเป็นคำศัพท์ที่ค่อนข้างง่าย เหมาะสมกับระดับอายุ
2.2 คำศัพท์เพื่อการพูด (A person’s speaking vocabulary) เป็นคำศัพท์ที่ใช้ในภาษา
พูดซึ่งต้องสัมพันธ์กับการฟัง คำศัพท์ประเภทนี้อาจเป็นแบบทางการหรือไม่เป็นทางการก็ได้ที่สำคัญคือ ต้องสื่อวามหมายให้เข้าใจ ซึ่งแบ่งได้ดังนี้
1. คำศัพท์ที่ใช้ภายในบ้านหรือระหว่างเพื่อนฝูง หรืออาจะเป็นคำแสลงได้
2. คำศัพท์ที่ใช้ในการเรียนหรือการทำงาน
3. คำศัพท์ที่ใช้ในการติดต่อราชการหรือใช้ในสังคมชีวิตประจำวัน
2.3 คำศัพท์เพื่อการอ่าน (A person’s reading vocabulary) เป็นคำศัพท์ที่ผู้เรียน
จะต้องฝึกทักษะต่างๆ เช่น การเดาจากบริบท (Context) หรือการใช้พจนานุกรมและจดจำความหมายของคำศัพท์นั้น ๆ ไว้เพื่อที่จะได้นำไปใช้ในการอ่านตำรา หรือเอกสารต่าง ๆ ต่อไป
2.4 คำศัพท์เพื่อการเขียน (A person’s writing vocabulary) เป็นคำศัพท์ที่ใช้ในการ
เขียนเพื่อเป็นการสื่อสารความหมายหรือการถ่ายทอดความคิดซึ่งเป็นแบบที่ค่อนข้างจะมีความถูกต้องและเป็นทางการประเภทคำศัพท์ที่ใช้ในการวิจัยครั้งนี้ คือคำศัพท์เพื่อการอ่าน เป็นการฝึกให้ผู้เรียนเรียนรู้คำศัพท์ ซึ่งประกอบอยู่ในบทอ่านแต่ละเรื่อง มีทั้งคำศัพท์ที่เรียนเพื่อรู้และคำศัพท์ที่เรียนเพื่อนำไปใช้ และเป็นคำศัพท์ที่มีความหลากหลาย เพราะบทอ่านที่ได้นำมาให้ผู้เรียนนั้นล้วนมีความแตกต่างกันทั้งสิ้น และเป็นคำศัพท์ที่ผู้เรียนสามารถนำไปใช้ในชีวิตประจำวันได้อีกด้วย

ชนิดของคำศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษ (Parts of Speech)
ปาริชาติ นาคะตะ (2536: 16, 35-36) ได้จำแนกคำออกเป็น 2 ชนิดตามการประกอบคำหรือ
ตามหน้าที่ที่อยู่ในคำคือ หน่วยคำหลัก (base morpheme) และหน่วยคำประกอบ (affix) และแบ่งคำ
ผสมออกเป็น 3 ชนิดใหญ่ๆ คือ คำผสมที่เป็นคำนาม (compound noun) เช่น cable television,
birthcontrol, dog-in-the-manger คำผสมที่เป็นคำคุณศัพท์ (compound adjective) เช่น bloodthirsty,card carrying, see-through และคำผสมที่เป็นคำกริยา (compound verb) เช่น overcome, sky-dive,soft-land
อรมา ประสิทธิ์รัฐสินธุ์ (2546: 20-25) กล่าวว่าชนิดของคำตรงกับภาษาอังกฤษว่า parts of
speech ซึ่งเป็นคำที่มักใช้ในไวยากรณ์ดั้งเดิม และตรงกับคำว่า word classes หรือ forms classes ซึ่ง
เป็นคำที่ใหม่กว่า และริเริ่มใช้โดยนักไวยากรณ์โครงสร้าง ในปัจจุบัน คำว่า parts of speech และ
word classes เป็นที่นิยมใช้เท่าๆ กัน ส่วนคำว่า form classes ไม่ค่อยเป็นที่นิยมนัก ชนิดของคำอาจ
แบ่งออกเป็นสามประเภทใหญ่ๆ ตามเกณฑ์ดังนี้ คือ
1. เกณฑ์ความหมาย แบ่งคำออกเป็น 8 ชนิดคือคำนาม คำสรรพนาม คำกริยา คำคุณศัพท์
คำวิเศษณ์ คำบุพบท คำสันธาน และคำอุทาน
2. เกณฑ์โครงสร้าง จำแนกชนิดของคำออกเป็น 8 ชนิดคือ verb, noun, adjective,
determiner, adverb, preposition, conjunction, sentence particle
3. เกณฑ์หน้าที่ แบ่งคำออกเป็นกลุ่มดังนี้คือ กลุ่มคำนาม (nominals) ได้แก่ noun, adjective,
numeral, determiner กลุ่มคำกริยา (verbals) ได้แก่ verb, preposition และกลุ่มคำกริยาวิเศษณ์
(adverbals) ได้แก่ adverb, conjunction
