ตำนานเงือก
เงือกเป็นเผ่าพันธุ์ของอมนุษย์สะเทิ้นน้ำสะเทิ้นบกอีกชนิดหนึ่ง ว่ากันว่าเงือกพวกนี้อาจมีถิ่นกำเนิดบนฝั่งบริตานี และว่ายข้ามช่องแคบอังกฤษไปยังคอร์วอลล์ จึงทำให้ผู้คนที่นั่นขนานนามว่า เมอร์เมด-เมอร์แมน(เงือกตัวเมีย-ตัวผู้) อันเป็นคำผสมของแองโกล-ฝรั่งเศส และจากคอร์นวอลล์นี่เอง เงือกก็แพร่พันธุ์ไปจนถึงฝั่งตะวันตกของเกาะอังกฤษ ไปถึงรอบๆสกอตแลนด์ตอนเหนือสู่สแกนดิเนเวีย มีบางครั้งที่เราอาจเห็นเงือกในจุดต่างๆตลอดแนวฝั่งยุโรปด้วย อาจเป็นเพราะเงือกชอบอากาศเย็นและแนวฝั่งแอตแลนติกของอังกฤษกับไอร์แลนด์ (อันหลังนี่เรียกเงือกว่าเมอร์โรว์และเมอรูชา)
ในต่างถิ่นมีตำนาน เล่าถึงกำเนิดของเงือกต่างๆกัน นิทานพื้นบ้านของโรมันบอกว่า ในสงครามกรุงทรอย เศษไม้จากซากเรือรบที่ถูกเผาวอดกลายสภาพเป็นเลือดเนื้อและเกิดเป็นสิ่งมี ชีวิตคือ เงือก ชาวไอริชเล่าว่านางเงือกคือผู้หญิงนอกศาสนาที่ถูกเนรเทศออกไปจากแผ่นดิน บางท้องถิ่นมีเรื่องเล่าว่า ชาวเงือกคือ ลูกๆของฟาโรห์ที่จมน้ำในทะเลแดง
ใน ตำนานเทพของกรีก ต้นตระกูลเงือกคือ ไตรตอน ซึ่งเป็นลูกของ โพเซดอน เทพเจ้าแห่งท้องทะเล กับพรายน้ำสาวตนหนึ่ง ผู้คนมักจินตนาการว่าไตรตอนมีหางเป็นปลา ไว้หนวดเครายาว ทรงอำนาจในท้องทะเลเหมือนพ่อ ไตรตอนอาศัยอยู่ในปราสาททองคำที่ซ่อนตัวอยู่ก้นทะเล มีตรีศูล(ฉมวกสามง่าม)เป็นอาวุธ คอยเป่าแตรหอยสังข์เพื่อควบคุมทะเลให้สงบหรือบ้าคลั่ง ไตรตอนจึงมีสมญาว่า นักเป่าแตรแห่งท้องทะเล
แต่ตำนานที่เก่าแก่กว่าเล่าว่า ชาวเงือกยุคบุกเบิกคือ โอนเนส (Oannes) เทพแห่งทะเลของชาวบาบิโลน (อาณาจักรโบราณในแถบเอเชียตะวันตกเฉียงใต้) ซึ่งมีพลังอำนาจต่อดวงอาทิตย์และดวงจันทร์ โอนเนสเป็นตัวแทนของดวงอาทิตย์ มีร่างกายเป็นมนุษย์และมีศีรษะเป็นปลา (บ้างก็ว่าสวมเสื้อคลุมปลา)โอน เนสจะปรากฏกายขึ้นมาจากทะเลในยามเช้าและกลับลงไปในทะเลตอนพลบค่ำทุกวัน ต่อมา เทพอียา(Ea) ซึ่งมีลักษณะครึ่งคนครึ่งปลาเช่นกันก็ได้ค่อยๆเข้ามามีบทบาทแทนที่โอนเนส ซึ่งถือกันว่า เทพเจ้าอียา เป็นบรรพบุรุษของเงือก ส่วนเทพเจ้า อาทาร์การ์ติส (Atargartis) เป็นตัวแทนของดวงจันทร์ มีลักษณะครึ่งคนครึ่งปลาเช่นเดียวกัน สาเหตุที่เทพเจ้าต่างๆของชาวบาบิโลนมีลักษณะดังกล่าวนี้ เพราะพวกเขาเชื่อว่า เมื่อพวกเขาเสร็จสิ้นภารกิจในแต่ละวัน ดวงอาทิตย์และดวงจันทร์ก็จะจมหายลงไปในทะเล ดังนั้นเทพเจ้าของเขาจึงควรมีรูปร่างลักษณะที่สามารถดำรงชีวิตอยู่ได้ทั้งใน น้ำและบนบก
