ที่มาของคำว่า "สูงเนิน" เป็นคำเรียกตามลักษณะภูมิประเทศ ซึ่งเป็นที่ราบสูงและเป็นเนิน เดิมเรียกว่า "บ้านสองเนิน" เพราะมีเนินดินอยู่สองฟากบึงแห้ว (บึงใหญ่ซึ่งมีน้ำตลอดปี) ต่อมาภายหลังจึงเพี้ยนมาเป็น "สูงเนิน" เดิมขึ้นอยู่กับอำเภอสันเทียะ (อำเภอโนนไทยในปัจจุบัน) ต่อมาสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 มีการสร้างทางรถไฟสายกรุงเทพ - นครราชสีมา และ ทางรถไฟตัดผ่านเข้าสูงเนิน อันเป็นชุมชนใหญ่ ทำให้การคมนาคมระหว่างบ้านสูงเนินกับตัวจังหวัดนครราชสีมา สะดวกสบายกว่าการติดต่อกับอำเภอสันเที่ยะ(โนนไทย) อีกทั้งประชาชนมาอยู่อาศัยในหมู่บ้านสูงเนินมากข้น เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2444 ทางราชการจึงยกฐานะเป็นอำเภอสูงเนิน โดยแยกต่างหากจากอำเภอสันเทียะ(โนนไทย) และใช้ชื่อหมู่บ้านเป็นชื่อ “อำเภอสูงเนิน”
อำเภอสูงเนิน มีเมืองสำคัญอยู่ 2 เมือง คือ เมืองเสมา และเมืองโคราฆะปุระหรือเมืองโคราช ซึ่งเมืองทั้งสองเป็นเมืองประวัติศาสตร์ของชาติไทยมาช้านานตั้งแต่สมัยสุวรรณภูมิ ต่อมาจึงได้ยุบเมืองทั้งสอง ไปเป็นเมืองนครราชสีมา อำเภอสูงเนิน ได้จัดตั้งขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 25 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2442 (ร.ศ.118)
