สมัยสุโขทัยนั้น ประเทศไทยกับประเทศลังกา มีความสัมพันธ์ด้านพระพุทธศาสนา ใกล้ชิดกันมากเพราะพระสงฆ์ชาวลังกา ได้เดินทางเข้ามาเผยแพร่พระพุทธศาสนา และเชื่อว่า ได้นำการประกอบพิธีวิสาขบูชามาปฏิบัติในประเทศไทยด้วย
