ประวัติแห่เทียนพรรษา
มีประเพณีหนึ่งที่เนื่องด้วยวันเข้าพรรษาและจัดเป็นประเพณีที่สำคัญและสืบทอดกันเรื่อยมา ก็คือ ประเพณีหล่อเทียนพรรษา สำหรับให้พระภิกษุและพุทธศาสนิกชนทั่วไปได้จุดบูชาพระประธานในโบสถ์ซึ่งเทียนพรรษาสามารถอยู่ได้ตลอด 3 เดือน และเป็นกุศลทานอย่างหนึ่งในการให้ทานด้วยแสงสว่าง ซึ่งในปัจจุบันได้พัฒนามาเป็นงานประเพณี "ประกวดเทียนพรรษา" ของแต่ละจังหวัดโดยจัดเป็นขบวนแห่ทั้งทางบกและทางน้ำ
การถวายเทียนเพื่อจุดตามประทีปเป็นพุทธบูชานั้น มาจากอานิสงส์การถวายเทียนเพื่อจุดเป็นพุทธบูชา ที่ปรากฏความในพระไตรปิฎกและในคัมภีร์อรรถกถา ว่าพระอนุรุทธะเถระ เคยถวายเทียนบูชาทำให้ได้รับอานิสงส์มากมาย รวมถึงได้เป็นผู้มีจักษุทิพย์ (ตาทิพย์) ด้วย ด้วยการพรรณาอานิสงส์ดังกล่าว อาจทำให้ชาวพุทธนิยมจุดประทีปเป็นพุทธบูชามานานแล้ว แต่ไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานว่าการทำเทียนพรรษาในประเทศไทยถวายเริ่มมีมาแต่สมัยใด แต่ปรากฏความในตำรับท้าวศรีจุฬาลักษณ์ ที่พรรณาการบำเพ็ญกุศลในช่วงเข้าพรรษาว่ามีการถวายเทียนพรรษาด้วย
ในประเทศไทย การถวายเทียนเข้าพรรษาจัดเป็นพิธีใหญ่มาตั้งแต่สมัยสุโขทัย ในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์การถวายเทียนเข้าพรรษาถือเป็นพระราชกรณียกิจสำคัญ โดยจะเรียกว่าพุ่มเทียน มีการพระราชทานถวายพุ่มเทียนรวมพึงโคมเพื่อจุดบูชาตามอารามต่าง ๆ ทั้งในพระนครและหัวเมือง ซึ่งพิธีนี้ยังคงมีมาจนปัจจุบัน
การถวายเทียนพรรษาโดยแกะสลักเป็นลวดลายต่าง ๆ นั้น มีมาแต่โบราณ เดิมเป็นประเพณีราชสำนักดังที่ปรากฏในเทียนรุ่งเทียนหลวงตามพระอารามต่าง ๆ สำหรับเทียนแกะสลักที่ปรากฏว่ามีการจัดทำประกวดกันเป็นเรื่องราวใหญ่โตในปัจจุบันนั้น พึ่งเริ่มมีเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2483 ในจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี โดยนายโพธิ์ ส่งศรี ได้เริ่มทำแม่พิมพ์ปูนซีเมนต์เพื่อหล่อขี้ผึ้งเป็นทำลวดลายไทยไปประดับติดพิมพ์บนเทียนพรรษา นับเป็นการจัดทำเทียนพรรษาแกะสลักของช่างราษฏร์เป็นครั้งแรก และนายสวน คูณผล ได้ทำลวดลายนูนสลับสีต่าง ๆ เข้าประกวดจนชนะเลิศ ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2497 จึงเริ่มมีการทำเทียนพรรษาติดพิมพ์ประกวดแบบพิสดารโดยนายประดับ ก้อนแก้ว คือทำเป็นรูปพุทธประวัติติดพิมพ์จนได้รับรางวัลชนะเลิศติดต่อกันมาหลายปี จนปี พ.ศ. 2502 นายคำหมา แสงงาม ช่างแกะสลัก ได้ทำเทียนพรรษาแบบแกะสลักมาประกวดเป็นครั้งแรกจนได้รับรางวัลชนะเลิศ จากนั้นจึงได้มีการแยกประเภทการประกวดต้นเทียนเป็นสองแบบคือ ประเภทติดพิมพ์ และประเภทแกะสลัก จนในช่วงหลังปี พ.ศ. 2511 นายอุตสาห์ และนายสมัย แสงวิจิตร ได้เริ่มมีการจัดทำเทียนพรรษาขนาดใหญ่โต ทำเป็นหุ่นและเรื่องราวต่าง ๆ ซึ่งเป็นลักษณะของเทียนพรรษาขนาดใหญ่ที่ปรากฏในปัจจุบัน
