ประวัติศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์ พีระศรี

ศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์ พีระศรี มีนามเดิมว่า คอร์ราโดเฟโรจี ( Professor Corrado Feroci ) เป็นชาวนครฟลอเรนซ์ ประเทศอิตาลี เกิดเมื่อ วันที่ 15 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2435 ณ. ตำบล San Giovanni บิดาชื่อ นาย Artudo Feroci และมารดาชื่อนาง Santina Feroci มีอาชีพค้าขาย

เข้าศึกษาในระดับชั้นประถม เมื่อปีพ.ศ.2441ภายหลังจบหลักสูตร 5 ปีจึงเข้าศึกษาในโรงเรียนมัธยมอีก 5 ปี จากนั้นจึงเข้าศึกษาทางด้านศิลปะในโรงเรียนราชวิทยาลัยศิลปะ แห่งนครฟลอเรนซ์ จบหลักสูตรวิชาช่าง 7 ปีในขณะที่มีอายุ 23 ปีและได้รับประกาศนียบัตรช่างปั้นช่างเขียนซึ่งต่อมาได้สอบคัดเลือกรับ ปริญญาบัตรเป็นศาสตราจารย์มีความรอบรู้ทางด้านประวัติศาสตร์ศิลป์วิจารณ์ ศิลป์และปรัชญาโดยเฉพาะมีความสามารถทางด้านศิลปะแขนงประติมากรรมและจิตรกรรม

ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 6 มีพระประสงค์จะหาช่างปั้นมาช่วยปฏิบัติราชการเพื่อฝึกฝนให้คนไทยสามารถปั้น รูปได้อย่างแบบตะวันตกและสามารถมีความรู้ถึงเทคนิคต่างๆในงานมาปฏิบัติ ราชการกับรัฐบาลไทย ทางรัฐบาลอิตาลีจึงเสนอนาย คอร์ราโด เฟโรจี มาพร้อมทั้งคุณวุฒิและผลงาน ซึ่งรัฐบาลไทยก็ยินดีรับเข้าเป็นข้าราชการในตำแหน่งช่างปั้น กรมศิลปากรกระทรวงวัง

เมื่อวันที่ 14 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2466 เมื่ออายุย่างเข้า32 ปีโดยได้รับเงินเดือนๆละ 800 บาทค่าเช่าบ้าน 80 บาท และต่อมาในปี พ.ศ.2469 ศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์พีระศรีได้ดำรงตำแหน่งอาจารย์ ช่างปั้นหล่อแผนกศิลปากรสถานแห่งราชบัณฑิตยสภาได้รับ เงินเดือนๆละ 900 บาทต่อมาได้ย้ายมาเป็นช่างปั้น สังกัดอยู่ในกองประณีตศิลปกรรมกรม ศิลปากรกระทรวงธรรมการ

ท่านได้วางหลัก สูตรอบรมกว้างๆและทำการสอนให้แก่ผู้ที่สนใจในวิชาประติมากรรมทั้งภาค ทฤษฎีและภาคปฏิบัติผู้ได้รับการอบรมรุ่นแรกๆส่วนมากสำเร็จการศึกษาจาก โรงเรียนเพาะ- ช่างได้แก่ สาย ประติมาปกร สุข อยู่มั่น ชิ้น ชื่อประสิทธิ์ สวัสดิ์ ชื่นมะนา และ แช่ม แดงชมพู

ซึ่งต่อมาบุคคลเหล่านี้ได้มาเป็นผู้ ช่วยช่างและบางคนก็เข้ารับราชการช่วยแบ่งเบาภาระงาน และช่วยทำให้กิจการปั้นหล่อของกรมศิลปากรเจริญขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็วเมื่อทาง ราชการเห็นความสำคัญของการศึกษาศิลปะตามแนวในปัจจุบันจึงได้ขอให้ ศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์ พระศรี เป็นผู้วางหลักสูตรการศึกษาให้มีมาตรฐานเดียวกันกับ โรงเรียนศิลปะในยุโรป

ศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์ พีระศรี จึงเริ่มวางหลักสูตรวิชาจิตรกรรมและประติมากรรมขึ้นในระยะเริ่มแรกชื่อ " โรงเรียนประณีตศิลปกรรม " ต่อมาเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น "โรงเรียนศิลปากรแผนกช่าง" และในปีพ.ศ.2485กรมศิลปากรได้แยกจากกระทรวง ศึกษาธิการไปขึ้นอยู่กับสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรีและรัฐบาลในขณะนั้นโดย ฯพณฯจอมพลป.พิบูลสงคราม นายกรัฐมนตรีตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของศิลปะว่าเป็นวัฒนธรรมที่สำคัญยิ่งสาขา หนึ่งของชาติ

จึงได้มีคำสั่งให้อธิบดีกรมศิลปากรในขณะนั้นคือพระยาอนุมานราชธนดำเนินการ ปรับปรุงหลักสูตร และ ตราพระราชบัญญัติยกฐานะโรงเรียนศิลปากรขึ้นเป็น มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร มีคณะจิตรกรรมประติมากรรม เป็นคณะวิชาเดียวของมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากรเปิดสอนเพียง 2 สาขาวิชาคือ สาขาจิตรกรรมและสาขาประติมากรรมและมี ศาสตราจารย์ ศิลป์ พีระศรีเป็นผู้อำนวยการสอนและดำรงตำแหน่งคณบดี คนแรก ดังนั้นการเรียนการสอนศิลปะในสาขาวิชาศิลปะจึงเริ่มดำเนินการในระดับปริญญา ขึ้นตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา

ในปีพ.ศ.2491 ศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์ พีระศรีได้รับมอบหมายจากรัฐบาลไทยให้นำศิลปะไทยไปแสดง ณ กรุงลอนดอน ประเทศอังกฤษ ในปีนี้ท่านได้เดินทางกลับไปประเทศอิตาลีและเดินทางกลับมาประเทศไทยอีกครั้ง ในต้นปีพ.ศ.2492โดยกลับมาใช้ชีวิตเป็นครูสั่งสอนลูกศิษย์ลูกหาทางด้านศิลปะ ที่คณะจิตรกรรม และประติมากรรม

ในปีพ.ศ.2496 ศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์ พีระศรีได้รับหน้าที่อันมีเกียรติ คือ เป็น ประธานกรรมการสมาคมศิลปะแห่งชาติ ซึ่งขึ้นอยู่กับ สมาคมศิลปะนานาชาติ (International Association of Art) ในปีพ.ศ.2497 ได้เป็นผู้แทนศิลปินไทยไปร่วมประชุมศิลปินระหว่างชาติ ครั้งแรกที่ประเทศออสเตรียท่านได้นำเอกสารผลงานศิลปะและบทความชื่อศิลปะร่วม สมัยในประเทศไทย(Contemporary Art inThailand) ไปเผยแพร่ในการประชุมด้วยทำให้นานาชาติรู้จักประเทศไทยดีขึ้นและนับเป็นคน แรกที่ทำให้เกิดการแลกเปลี่ยนศิลปะระหว่างศิลปินไทยและศิลปินต่างประเทศขึ้น

ศาสตราจารย์ ศิลป์ พีระศรี ถึงแก่กรรมที่โรงพยาบาลศิริราช เมื่อวันที่ 14 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2505 รวมสิริอายุได้ 70 ปี
