ผ่านไป1ปีเจนก็ไม่สามารถลืมรอเชสเตอร์ได้เลย จึงกลับมาที่คฤหาสน์ของรอเชสเตอร์แต่กลับพบว่าบ้านทั้งหลังมีสภาพเหมือนถูกไฟไหม้ สาวใช้จึงบอกว่าคนวางเพลิงคือเบอร์ทา เมสันซึ่งหลังจากไฟไหม้บ้านเบอร์ทาก็ปีนขึ้นหลังคาแล้วกระโดดลงมาเสียชีวิตทันทีส่วนรอเชสเตอร์ก็กลายเป็นคนตาบอดทั้งสองข้างและเสียมือไปข้างนึง เรื่องจบลงเมื่อเจนตัดสินใจแต่งงานกับรอเชสเตอร์และดวงตาของรอเชสเตอร์ก็ค่อยๆมองเห็นชัดขึ้นเรื่อยๆ
