อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์พิมาย เป็นหนึ่งในอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ของประเทศไทย ที่ตั้งอยู่ในตัวอำเภอพิมาย จังหวัดนครราชสีมา ประกอบด้วยปราสาทหินในสมัยอาณาจักรขอมที่ใหญ่โตและงดงาม สร้างขึ้นในสมัยพระเจ้าสุริยวรมันที่ 1 ราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 16 เพื่อใช้เป็นเทวสถานของศาสนาพราหมณ์
ประวัติ
เมืองพิมายเป็นเมืองที่สร้างตามแบบแผนของศิลปะเขมร หรือ กัมพูชา มีลักษณะเป็นเวียงสี่เหลี่ยม ชื่อ พิมาย น่าจะมาจากคำว่า วิมายหรือ วิมายปุระ ที่ปรากฏในจารึกภาษาเขมรบนแผ่นหินตรงกรอบประตูระเบียงคดด้านหน้าของปราสาท จากหลักฐานศิลาจารึกและศิลปะสร้างบ่งบอกว่า ปราสาทหินพิมายคงเริ่มสร้างขึ้นสมัยพระเจ้าสุริยวรมันที่ 1 ราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 16 ในฐานะเทวสถานของศาสนาพราหมณ์ รูปแบบของศิลปะเป็นแบบบาปวนผสมผสานกับศิลปะแบบนครวัด ซึ่งหมายถึงปราสาทนี้ได้ถูกดัดแปลงมาเป็นสถานที่ทางศาสนาพุทธในสมัยพระเจ้าชัยวรมันที่ 7

ในปี พ.ศ. 2479 กรมศิลปากรได้ประกาศขึ้นทะเบียนปราสาทหินพิมายเป็นโบราณสถาน และได้จัดตั้งเป็น อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์พิมาย ในวันที่12 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2532 โดยได้ดำเนินการปรับปรุงจัดตั้งถึง 13 ปี ร่วมมือกันระหว่างกรมศิลปากร และประเทศฝรั่งเศส ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2519-2532 ซึ่งสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี ได้เสด็จฯ พระราชดำเนิน เป็นองค์ประธานในพิธีเปิดอุทยาน
โบราณสถาน
ตัวอุทยานตั้งอยู่ฟากทิศตะวันออกของแม่น้ำมูล บนพื้นที่ 115 ไร่ วางแผนเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้า กว้าง 565 เมตร ยาว 1,030 เมตร ลักษณะพิเศษของปราสาทหินพิมาย คือ ปราสาทหินแห่งนี้สร้างหันหน้าไปทางทิศใต้ ต่างจากปราสาทหินอื่นๆที่มักหันไปทางทิศตะวันออก สันนิษฐานว่าเพื่อให้หันรับกับเส้นทางตัดมาจากเมืองยโศธรปุระ เมืองหลวงในสมัยนั้นของขอม ซึ่งเข้ามาสู้เมืองพิมายทางทิศใต้

พลับพลา
ตั้งอยู่บริเวณด้านหน้ากำแพงชั้นนอก ด้านซ้ายมือของทางเดินเข้าสู่ตัวปราสาท เป็นอาคารรูปสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้า เดิมเรียกกันว่า "คลังเงิน" จากตำแหน่งที่ตั้งสันนิษฐานว่าคงเป็นที่พักเตรียมพระองค์สำหรับกษัตริย์ หรือเจ้านายชั้นสูงที่เสด็จมาประกอบพิธีกรรมทางศาสนา รวมทั้งเป็นสถานที่พักจัดขบวนสิ่งของถวายต่างๆ จากการขุดแต่งบริเวณนี้เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2511 ได้พบโบราณวัตถุจำนวนมาก มีทั้งรูปเคารพ เครื่องประดับ และเหรียญสำริด เป็นเหตุให้เรียกกันว่า "คลังเงิน"
หอพราหมณ์
เป็นอาคารก่อด้วยหินทรายและศิลาแลง ตั้งอยู่บนฐานเดียวกันกับบปรางค์หินแดง ในปี พ.ศ. 2493 ได้ค้นพบศิวลึงค์ สลักด้วยหินทรายจำนวน 7 ชิ้นอยู่ภายในหอพราหมณ์ เชื่อกันว่าอาคารหลังนี้คงเป็นสถานที่ประกอบพิธีทางศาสนาพราหมณ์ แต่จากรูปแบบและตำแหน่งที่ตั้งเดิมคงเป็นที่ตั้งของบรรณาลัยมากกว่า

ปรางค์พรหมทัต
ลักษณะของปรางค์องค์นี้ สร้างด้วยศิลาแลงตั้งอยู่ด้านหน้าของปราสาทประธานทางด้านทิศตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ฐานเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมจตุรัส ประตูทำเป็นมุขยื่นออกไปทั้ง 4 ทิศ ภายในองค์ปรางค์พบประติมากรรมสำคัญ 2 ชิ้น คือ ประติมากรรมรูปบุคคลขนาดใหญ่อยู่ในท่านั่งขัดสมาธิ สลักด้วยหินทราย สันนิษฐานว่าเป็นรูปจำลองของพระเจ้าชัยวรมันที่ 7 ชาวบ้านเรียกว่า ท้าวพรหมทัต ส่วนอีกรูปเป็นรูปสตรีนั่งคุกเข่าสลักด้วยหินทราย ส่วนศีรษะและแขนหักหายไป เชื่อกันว่าเป็นรูปของพระนางชัยราขเทวีมเหสี ชาวบ้านเรียกตามนิยายพื้นบ้านว่า นางอรพิม ปัจจุบันประติมากรรมทั้ง 2 ชิ้นนี้จัดแสดงอยู่ในพิพิธภัณฑ์สถานแห่งชาติพิมาย
