ความเป็นมาและการเปลี่ยนแปลงวันขึ้นปีใหม่ของไทย

ความหมายของสงกรานต์
คำว่า "สงกรานต์" มาจากภาษาสันสกฤต แปลว่า "ก้าวขึ้น" หรือ "ผ่าน" หรือ "เคลื่อนย้าย" หมายถึง การเคลื่อนย้ายของพระอาทิตย์จากราศีหนึ่งเข้าไปอีกราศีหนึ่ง เช่น เคลื่อนจากราศีพฤกษภไปสู่ราศีเมถุน ซึ่งจะเป็นเหตุการณ์ปกติที่เกิดขึ้นทุกเดือน เรียกว่าสงกรานต์เดือน ยกเว้นว่าเมื่อพระอาทิตย์เคลื่อนเข้าสู่ราศีเมษเมื่อใดก็ตามก็จะเรียกชื่อเป็นพิเศษว่า "มหาสงกรานต์" อันหมายถึงการก้าวขึ้นครั้งใหญ่ ซึ่งนับเป็นครั้งสำคัญ เพราะถือว่าวันนี้เป็นวันปีใหม่ตามคติพราหมณ์ โดยการนับทางสุริยคติ ซึ่งจะตกในราววันที่ ๑๓,๑๔ หรือ ๑๕ เมษายน ซึ่งแต่ละวันจะมีชื่อเรียกเฉพาะดังนี้

วันที่ ๑๓ เมษายน เรียกว่า "วันมหาสงกรานต์" หมายถึง วันที่พระอาทิตย์เคลื่อนเข้าสู่ราศีเมษอีกครั้ง หลังจากผ่านเข้าสู่ราศีอื่น ๆ แล้วจนครบ ๑๒ เดือน
วันที่ ๑๔ เมษายน เรียกว่า "วันเนา" แปลว่า วันอยู่ หมายถึง วันที่ดวงอาทิตย์เข้าเคลื่อนเข้าสู่ราศีเมษอันเป็นราศีตั้งต้นปี เข้าที่เข้าทางเรียบร้อยแล้ว
วันที่ ๑๕ เมษายน เรียกว่า "วันเถลิงศก" เป็นวันเปลี่ยนจุลศักราชใหม่ ถือเป็นวันเริ่มปีศักราชใหม่ การกำหนดให้อยู่วันนี้ก็เพื่อให้แน่ใจว่าดวงอาทิตย์โคจรขาดจากราศีมีนมาสู่ราศีเมษแล้วอย่างน้อย ๑ องศา

ทั้งสามวันนี้ ถ้าหากดูตามประกาศสงกรานต์ และการคำนวณตามหลักโหราศาสตร์จริง ๆ ก็จะมีการคลาดเคลื่อนไม่ตรงกันบ้าง เช่น วันมหาสงกรานต์ อาจจะเป็นวันที่ ๑๔ เมษายน แทนที่จะเป็นวันที่ ๑๓ เมษายน แต่เพื่อให้จดจำได้ง่าย จึงกำหนดเรียกตามที่กล่าวข้างต้น

คุณค่าสาระประเพณีสงกรานต์
การที่สงกรานต์ยังเป็นประเพณีที่ไทยเรายังถือปฏิบัติ และสามารถสืบทอดต่อเนื่องมาจนทุกวันนี้ ก็เพราะความหมาย คุณค่า และสาระที่แฝงอยู่ คือ
