ศาสตราจารย์เกียรติคุณประหยัด พงษ์ดำ ถึงแก่อนิจกรรมอย่างสงบด้วยสาเหตุระบบหายใจและไหลเวียนโลหิตล้มเหลว ณ บ้านเลขที่ 237/1 ซอยเพชรเกษม 72 แขวงบางแคเหนือ เขตภาษีเจริญ กรุงเทพมหานคร เมื่อเวลาประมาณ 05.00 น. ของวันศุกร์ที่ 19 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2557 สิริรวมอายุ 79 ปี 10 เดือน[1][2][3][4]

ในการนี้ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานโกศแปดเหลี่ยม พร้อมฉัตรเบญจาตั้งประกอบเกียรติยศ และพระราชทานน้ำหลวงอาบศพ ศาสตราจารย์เกียรติคุณประหยัด พงษ์ดำ ณ ศาลา 1 (เตชะอิทธิพร) วัดเทพศิรินทราวาส เมื่อวันศุกร์ที่ 19 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2557 เวลา 19.00 น. และรับศพไว้ในพระบรมราชานุเคราะห์ พร้อมทั้งพระราชทานพระพิธีธรรมสวดพระอภิธรรมศพ มีกำหนด 7 วัน ระหว่างวันที่ 19 ถึง 25 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2557 ทั้งยังทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานพวงมาลาหลวง และพวงมาลาของพระบรมวงศานุวงศ์อีกด้วย[5]
