ประเทศไทยนำเข้าพันธุ์ไก่ไข่ในปริมาณที่ลดลงในปี 2547-2548 เนื่องจากวิกฤตการณ์ของโรคไข้หวัดนกเมื่อปลายปี 2546 จนถึงต้นปี 2547 แม่ไก่ไข่จำนวนมากถูกทำลาย ทำให้เกิดภาวะขาดแคลนแม่ไก่ไข่ หลังจากสถานการณ์โรคไข้หวัดนกเริ่มคลี่คลาย ผู้บริโภคมีความมั่นใจในคุณภาพไข่ไก่ เกษตรกรผู้เลี้ยงไก่ไข่โดยเฉพาะรายใหญ่จึงเพิ่มปริมาณการเลี้ยงไก่ไข่ พร้อมกับพัฒนาระบบการเลี้ยงในโรงเรือน และเข้มงวดมาตรการควบคุมโรคในฟาร์ม ทำให้จำนวนแม่ไก่ไข่และประสิทธิภาพการผลิตของแม่ไก่สูงขึ้นจนเกิดปัญหาไข่ไก่ล้นตลาดและราคาไข่ไก่ตกต่ำอย่างต่อเนื่อง เกษตรกรจำนวนมากประสบภาวะขาดทุนและเลิกกิจการไปในที่สุด

หากปัจจัยการผลิตอาหารสัตว์มีราคาสูงขึ้น จะส่งผลทำให้ต้นทุนการผลิตอาหารสัตว์สำเร็จรูปสูงขึ้น และส่งผลทำให้ต้นทุนการผลิตไข่ไก่สูงขึ้นตามไปด้วยในกรณีนี้หากผู้เลี้ยงไก่ไข่ใช้วัตถุดิบอาหารสัตว์ผสมเองอาจจะต้องปรับสูตรอาหารสัตว์เพื่อลดต้นทุนการผลิตโดยการเปลี่ยนจากข้าวโพดอาหารสัตว์เป็นปลายข้าวหรือมันเส้นได้ ดังนั้นหากราคาปัจจัยการผลิตอาหารไข่ไก่เพิ่มขึ้นหรือลดลงก็จะส่งผลต่อต้นทุนการผลิตไข่ไก่ไปในทิศทางเดียวกัน (นพวรรณ ชมชัย 2542)
