รัฐบาลของไทยเราได้ออกพระราชบัญญัติการส่งเสริมการอนุรักษ์พลังงาน พ.ศ. 2535 และ พระราชบัญญัติการส่งเสริมการอนุรักษ์พลังงาน พ.ศ. 2550 (ฉบับที่ 2) สำหรับโรงงานควบคุมและอาคารควบคุมเพื่อช่วยให้มีการผลิตและใช้พลังงานอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพและประหยัด พร้อมทั้งส่งเสริมให้มีการอนุรักษ์พลังงานมากขึ้น โดยที่โรงงานควบคุมและอาคารควบคุมจะต้องมีผู้รับผิดชอบด้านพลังงานอย่างน้อย 1 คน ในการดำเนินกิจกรรมการอนุรักษ์พลังงานตามกฎหมาย

ก่อนอื่นก็ต้องมารู้จักกับพลังงานทดแทนก่อนนะครับ พลังงานทดแทนสามารถแบ่งตามแหล่งที่มาได้เป็น 2 ประเภท คือ

1. พลังงานทดแทนจากแหล่งที่ใช้แล้วหมดไป อาจเรียกว่า พลังงานสิ้นเปลือง อันได้แก่ ถ่านหิน ก๊าซธรรมชาติ นิวเคลียร์ หินน้ำมัน และทรายน้ำมัน เป็นต้น

2. พลังงานทดแทนที่ใช้แล้วสามารถหมุนเวียนนำมาใช้ได้อีก เรียกว่า พลังงานหมุนเวียน ได้แก่ แสงอาทิตย์ ลม ชีวมวล น้ำ และไฮโดรเจน เป็นต้น
