เทนนิสคือ เป็นกีฬาที่เล่นในร่มหรือกลางแจ้งโดยมีผู้เล่น 2 คนในประเภทเดี่ยว และ 4 คนในประเภทคู่ ใช้ไม้เทนนิสตีส่งลูกไปมาเหนือตาข่ายภายในเขตที่กำหนด โดยพยายามไม่ ให้คู่ต่อสู้รับลูกได้

เทนนิสเป็นเกมกีฬาชนิดหนึ่งซึ่งใช้ไม้แร็กเก็ต เป็นการแข่งขันระหว่างผู้เล่นสองคน (Singles) หรือระหว่างผู้เล่นสองคู่ (Doubles) กีฬาเทนนิสถือกำเนิดในยุโรปช่วงปลายศตวรรษที่19 ช่วงแรกๆนั้นเทนนิสได้แพร่ขยายไปยังกลุ่มประเทศที่ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษ โดยเฉพาะกลุ่มชนชั้นสูง แท้จริงแล้วเทนนิสเป็นกีฬาสากลและเป็นเกมที่เล่นกันเกือบทุกประเทศทั่วโลก ตั้งแต่ปีค.ศ.1926 ซึ่งมีการจัดTournamentครั้งแรก เทนนิสจึงได้กลายเป็นกีฬาอาชีพ เทนนิสได้ถูกบรรจุในกีฬาโอลิมปิก ณ โซล ปีค.ศ.1988

การแข่งขันจะแบ่งออกเป็นเซต แต่ละเซตแบ่งเป็นเกม แต่ละเกมเริ่มต้นด้วยคะแนน 0 ต่อ 0 การนับคะแนนเริ่มจาก 0-15 หรือ 15-0 โดยขานคะแนนของฝ่ายส่งลูกก่อน ตามด้วย 30 และ 40 ถ้าคะแนนเสมอกัน 40-40 เรียกว่า "ดิวซ์" (deuce) หากใครทำคะแนนสองแต้มติดต่อกันจะเป็นผู้ชนะในเกมนั้น และใครได้ 6 เกมก่อนจะเป็นผู้ชนะในเซต หากเสมอกัน 6-6 เกม ต้องแข่งขันกันในไทเบรก (tie-break) นับแต้ม 1, 2, 3, ... ใครได้ 7 แต้มก่อนเป็นฝ่ายชนะในเซตนั้น
