พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงตระหนักดีว่า การพัฒนาการศึกษาของเยาวชนนั้น เป็นพื้นฐานอันสำคัญของประเทศชาติ จึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานพระราชทรัพย์จัดตั้งมูลนิธิอานันทมหิดล ให้เป็นทุนสำหรับการศึกษาในแขนงวิชาต่าง ๆ เพื่อให้นักศึกษาได้มีทุนออกไปศึกษา หาความรู้ต่อในวิชาการชั้นสูงในประเทศต่าง ๆ โดยไม่มีเงื่อนไขข้อผูกพันแต่ประการใด เพื่อที่จะได้นำความรู้นั้น ๆ กลับมาใช้พัฒนาประเทศชาติให้เจริญก้าวหน้าต่อไป

H.M.K picture นอกเหนือไปจากนี้แล้ว ทรงมีพระราชดำริให้ดำเนินการจัดทำสารานุกรมไทยสำหรับเยาวชนขึ้น สารานุกรมชุดนี้ มีลักษณะพิเศษที่แตกต่างจากสารานุกรมชุดอื่น ๆ ที่ได้เคยจัดพิมพ์มาแล้ว กล่าวคือ เป็นสารานุกรมอเนกประสงค์ที่บรรจุเรื่องราวต่าง ๆ ที่เป็นสาระไว้ครบทุกแขนงวิชา โดยจัดแบ่งเนื้อหาของแต่ละเรื่องออกเป็นสามระดับ เพื่อที่จะให้เยาวชนแต่ละรุ่น ตลอดจนผู้ใหญ่ที่มีความสนใจ สามารถที่จะศึกษาค้นคว้าหาความรู้ ได้ตามความเหมาะสมของพื้นฐานความรู้ ของแต่ละคน โดยมีวิทยากรผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิในแต่ละสาขาวิชา การอุทิศเวลาและความรู้ เพื่อสนองพระราชดำริ โดยร่วมกันเขียนเรื่องต่าง ๆ ขึ้น แบ่งออกเป็น 4 สาขาวิชา คือ วิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยี สังคมศาสตร์และมนุษยศาสตร์
