วัดโพธิ์ชัย เดิมชื่อ วัดผีผิว วัดนี้ใช้เป็นที่เผาผีหรือเผาศพ และมีผีดุ ต่อมาได้เปลี่ยนชื่อใหม่ เป็นวัดโพธิ์ชัย ใน สมัยกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ปัจจุบันเป็นสถานที่ประดิษฐานหลวงพ่อพระใส ซึ่งเป็นพระพุทธรูปขัดสมาธิราบปางมารวิชัย สมัยเชียงแสน ชั้นหลัง หล่อด้วยทองสุก (ทองคำ ที่มีเนื้อทองคำบริสุทธิ์ ประมาณ 92 เปอร์เซนต์ สีทองคำจะมีสีเหลืองเข้ม เรียกว่า สีทองสุก) มีพระพุทธลักษณะงดงามมาก ขนาดหน้าตักกว้าง 2 คืบ 8 นิ้ว สูงจากเบื้องล่างพระชงฆ์ ถึงยอดพระเกศ 4 คืบ 1 นิ้ว มีห่วงกลมขนาด หัวแม่มือจำนวน 3 ห่วง ติดกับพระแท่นซึ่งหล่อติดกับองค์พระใส สำหรับผูกเชือกติดกับยานเวลาที่อัญเชิญลงมาแห่รอบเมืองให้ประชาชน ได้สรงน้ำในช่วงวันสงกรานต์

หลวงพ่อพระใส จัดสร้างขึ้นโดย พระราชธิดาพระเจ้าไชยเชษฐาธิราช กษัตริย์แห่ง ล้านช้าง ทั้ง 3 พระองค์ คือ พระสุก พระเสริม และพระใส

พระสุก นั้นได้จมลงที่แม่น้ำโขงขณะอัญเชิญลงมายังกรุงเทพ บริเวณที่พระสุกจมลงชาวบ้านจึงเรียกว่า เวินพระสุก ยังปรากฏมาจนปัจจุบันนี้

ส่วนพระเสริมนั้นได้อัญเชิญลงมายังกรุงเทพฯ ปัจจุบันประดิษฐานอยู่ที่วัดปทุมวนาราม

วัดโพธิ์ชัยได้รับพระมหากรุณาธิคุณจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช เสด็จเป็นองค์ประธาน ยกช่อฟ้าพระอุโบสถวัดโพธิ์ชัย พ.ศ. 2522 ได้รับพระราชทานวิสุงคามสีมา พ.ศ. 2523 ประกอบพิธีผูกพัทธสีมา พ.ศ. 2524 ยกฐานะขึ้นเป็น พระอารามหลวงชั้นตรี ชนิดสามัญ
