การศึกษาระดับอุดมศึกษา แบ่งเป็น 3 ประเภท
1. ระดับมหาวิทยาลัย (University Education) ภาษาดัตช์ เรียกว่าuniversiteiten" เน้นการศึกษาวิจัยค้นคว้าโดยอิสระ มหาวิทยาลัยใน เนเธอร์แลนด์ในขณะนี้มีจำนวน 13 แห่งเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยของรัฐ จำนวน 10 แห่ง และมหาวิทยาลัยเอกชน 3 แห่ง ขนาดของมหาวิทยาลัยมีแตกต่างกันตั้งแต่นักศึกษา จำนวน 6,000 คนจนถึง 30,000 คน

หลักสูตรการสอนระดับมหาวิทยาลัย มี 3 ระดับคือ
Bachelor&quoat;s degree รับผู้สำเร็จการศึกษาระดับมัธยมศึกษา หลักสูตร 6 ปีซึ่งได้คุณวุฒิ VWO หรือเรียกว่า University Preparatory Education ใช้เวลาศึกษาอีก 3 ปีในสาขาทั่วไป สาขาที่ศึกษามากกว่า 3 ปี ได้แก่ แพทยศาสตร์ (6 ปี) ทันตแพทยศาสตร์ (5 ปี) เภสัชศาสตร์ (6 ปี) และสัตวแพทย์ (6 ปี) การเรียกชื่อปริญญา : BA, BSc. , Bachelor of (สาขาวิชา)
Master&quoat;s degree ใช้เวลาศึกษา 1 - 2 ปีต่อจากระดับปริญญาตรี ทั้งนี้ขึ้นอยู่กับสาขาวิชาและมหาวิทยาลัยเป็นผู้กำหนด ปริญญาในระดับนี้ได้แก่ MA, MSc., MBA, Master of (สาขาวิชา)
Phd Program เป็นการศึกษาวิจัยเพื่อรับปริญญาเอกและเขียนวิทยานิพนธ์ (dissertation) ใช้ระยะเวลาศึกษา 4 ปีต่อจากระดับปริญญาโทขั้นตอนการเข้าศึกษาวิจัยเพื่อรับปริญญาเอกนี้เรียกว่า "promotie" และเมื่อสำเร็จการศึกษาจะได้รับปริญญาเอก "doctoraat" หรือ PhD
2. ระดับสถาบันวิชาชีพชั้นสูง (Higher professional education ภาษาดัตช์เรียกว่า "hogescholen") จัดสอนโดย University of professional education ซึ่งมีจำนวน 60 แห่ง สถาบันที่ใหญ่ที่สุด มีนักศึกษาประมาณ 20,000 - 25,000 คน การศึกษาระดับนี้มุ่งเน้นให้นักศึกษามีความรู้ทางทฤษฎี ควบคู่กับการพัฒนะทักษะในการปฏิบัติงานในวิชาชีพเฉพาะด้านโดยกำหนดให้มีการฝึกงานนอกสถานศึกษาด้วย หลักสูตรการสอนระดับ Universities of profeessional มี 2 ระดับคือ

Institute for International Education เป็นสถาบันการศึกษาพิเศษที่ใช้หลักสูตรภาษาอังกฤษในการเรียนการสอน มีจำนวน 15 แห่ง และมี หลักสูตรต่าง ๆ ประมาณ 850 สาขาวิชา โดยสถาบันประเภทนี้รับผู้สำเร็จการศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรี หรือปริญญาโท และมีประสบการณ์ในการทำงาน หลักสูตรการสอนมี 3 ระดับคือ Diploma หรือ Certificate (2 สัปดาห์ - 1 ปี) Master&quoat;s degree (1-2 ปี) และ PhD (4 ปี) ในปัจจุบันสถาบันการศึกษาประเภท Universities และ Universities of Professional หลายแห่งเปิดสอนหลักสูตรโดยใช้ภาษาอังกฤษในการเรียนการสอนด้วย
