Between the end of February and Apr

Between the end of February and April of 2008, nine thoroughbred
mares (five of them pregnant), between 4 and 18
years old, died on a farm in Bursa, Turkey, that had 405
horses. Briefly, all the horses on the farm were regularly
grazed on different parts of the pasture and they were
not equally exposed to the same feed stuffs because of its
different origins. Generally, the horses were fed approximately
9 kg pasture grass hay, 5 kg alfalfa, and 4 kg concentrated
feed as dry basis, and grass from their pasture ad
libitum (approximately, 5–10 kg, wet weight) on a daily
diet. The affected horses showed clinical findings that developed
over a short period and included severe abdominal
pain, lack of response to analgesics and antispasmodics,
diarrhea, shallow and rapid breathing, tachycardia, bluebrown
discoloration of mucosal membranes, tremors,
ataxia, convulsions before death, and abortion in the pregnant
mares. Affected animals died within 24 hours after the
onset of symptoms. Some hematological parameters
(erythrocyte, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular
volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and differential
leukocyte cell count [neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte,
eosinophil and basophile]) were examined. Hematological
examinations of three horses with intestinal rupture
showed leukopenia (> 5,000/mL) and thrombocytopenia
(> 100,000/mL).
