จากหลักฐานทางโบราณคดีที่พบอยู่ทั่วไปในเขตจังหวัดนครราชสีมา ทำให้เชื่อได้ว่าบริเวณนี้เคยมีชุมชนโบราณยุคก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ตั้งอยู่ จนกระทั่งเข้าสู่ยุคประวัติศาสตร์ก็ยังคงความเจริญรุ่งเรืองมาตลอดตั้งแต่สมัยทวารวดี โดยมีศูนย์กลางความเจริญอยู่ที่เมืองเสมา เป็นเมืองใหญ่อยู่ในบริเวณที่เป็นอำเภอสูงเนินในปัจจุบัน



ต่อมาในสมัยขอมเรืองอำนาจ มีการสร้างเมืองโคราฆะปุระ หรือเมืองโคราช ขึ้นในบริเวณใกล้เคียง และมีเมืองพิมายเป็นเมืองใต้ปกครองที่สำคัญ จนถึงสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา สมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราชโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างเมืองขึ้นใหม่ โดยเอาชื่อเมืองเสมากับเมืองโคราฆะปุระมาผูกกันเป็นนามเมืองใหม่ เรียกว่า “เมืองนครราชสีมา” แต่คนทั่วไปนิยมเรียกกันว่า “เมืองโคราช”

โคราชมีความเจริญรุ่งเรืองต่อมาจนกลายเป็นชุมทางการค้าที่สำคัญระหว่างภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือกับภาคกลาง จนในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้มีการจัดตั้งมณฑลนครราชสีมาขึ้นเป็นมณฑลแรกของประเทศ เพื่อควบคุมดูแลหัวเมืองในบริเวณใกล้เคียง

ปัจจุบันจังหวัดนครราชสีมาเป็นเมืองศูนย์ราชการที่สำคัญรองจากกรุงเทพมหานคร และเป็นศูนย์กลางทางด้านต่างๆ ของภูมิภาค รวมทั้งเป็นที่ตั้งของกองกำลังรบหลักของกองทัพบกและกองทัพอากาศด้วย
