ประเพณี “อุ้มพระดำน้ำ” เป็นประเพณีที่แปลกประหลาด มีเกิดขึ้นที่ จ.เพชรบูรณ์ เพียงแห่งเดียว นอกจากมีเรื่องราวเชิงอิทธิปาฏิหาริย์เข้าไปผูกพันแล้ว ยังนับเป็น “มรดกทางวัฒนธรรม” ที่แฝงไว้ด้วย “ภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่น” ซึ่งบรรพบุรุษนำความเชื่อและศรัทธาจากชาวบ้านที่มีต่อพุทธศาสนาและองค์พระพุทธมหาธรรมราชา ให้เกิดการดูแลรักษาแม่น้ำลำคลอง



จุดกำเนิดของพิธีกรรม “อุ้มพระดำน้ำ” ประเพณีที่มีตำนานความเชื่อเล่าขานสืบทอดมาว่าสมัยเมื่อราว 400 ปี ที่ผ่านมามีชาวเพชรบูรณ์กลุ่มหนึ่ง ได้ออกหาปลาในแม่น้ำป่าสัก และในวันนั้นได้เกิดเหตุการณ์ประหลาดคือ ตั้งแต่เช้ายันบ่ายไม่มีใครจับปลาได้สักตัวเดียว เลยพากันนั่งปรับทุกข์ริมตลิ่ง ที่บริเวณ “วังมะขามแฟบ” อยู่ทางตอนเหนือของตัวเมืองเพชร บูรณ์ จากนั้นสายน้ำที่ไหลเชี่ยวได้หยุดนิ่ง พร้อมกับมีพรายน้ำค่อย ๆ ผุดขึ้นมา และกลายเป็นวังน้ำวนขนาดใหญ่ รวมทั้งมีพระพุทธรูปองค์หนึ่งลอย ขึ้นมาเหนือน้ำ แสดงอาการดำผุดดำว่ายอย่างน่าอัศจรรย์ ชาวบ้านคนหนึ่งในกลุ่มจึงลงไปอัญเชิญขึ้นมาประดิษฐานที่วัดไตรภูมิ
