อุทยานแห่งชาติภูกระดึง ตั้งอยู่ที่อำเภอภูกระดึงในจังหวัดเลย เป็นหนึ่งในแหล่งท่องเที่ยวที่มีชื่อเสียงมากที่สุดของประเทศไทย เนื่องจากมีธรรมชาติที่สวยงาม ในแต่ละปีจึงมีคนมาเที่ยวเฉลี่ยหลายหมื่นคน โดยเฉพาะในช่วงวันหยุดยาวมักมีนักท่องเที่ยวขึ้นไปพักผ่อนบนภูกระดึงจำนวนมาก ภูกระดึงได้รับการจัดตั้งเป็นป่าสงวนแห่งชาติในปี พ.ศ. 2486 และเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติเมื่อวันที่ 7 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2502 โดยเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติลำดับที่สองถัดจากอุทยานแห่งชาติเขาใหญ่
คำว่า "ภูกระดึง" มาจากคำว่า ภู แปลว่า ภูเขา และ กระดึง แปลว่า กระดิ่ง เป็นภาษาพื้นเมืองของจังหวัดเลย ด้วยเหตุนี้ ภูกระดึง จึงอาจแปลได้ว่า ระฆังใหญ่ ชื่อนี้มาจากเรื่องเล่าที่ว่าในวันพระชาวบ้านมักได้ยินเสียงกระดิ่งหรือระฆังจากภูเขาลูกนี้เสมอ เล่ากันว่าเป็นระฆังของพระอินทร์ ส่วนอีกข้อสันนิษฐานหนึ่งคือในบริเวณบางส่วนของยอดเขาหากเดินหนักๆหรือใช้ไม้กระทุ้งก็จะมีเสียงก้องคล้ายระฆังซึ่งเกิดจากโพรงข้างใต้ จึงได้รับการตั้งชื่อว่า "ภูกระดึง"
